I have a (i think 1952) John Deere Styled A. It is all stock and i ave started taking it apart to restore it. i am down to the engine so i need some help on what to do. i plan to dead weight it every weekend in the summer and live weight at local fairs. some people say to bore it out and alot of things and others say leave it stock so it pulls down before it spins. where is the line where you have to much horse and what gear should i pull in thanks shohn

Please don't poke and stroke that late A. Just overbore alittle get some nice oversised aluminum piston, a good set of tires and paint job, and pull that A in first and lug by the others. 2nd gear requires changes, that would ruin your nice farm tractor. Just my oppinion, but if you are gonna desicrate something get a old G or a earlier A. Greg H.

Any more you either need to go big cubes or freshen the old girl up. If you plan on pulling a lot of dead weight, I don't think I would go big. I doubt you will power out with the low speed tranny and a fresh engine. We have a guy that pulls in our club who has the late rear end and an unstyled front. He will pull 4500# - 8500#. He just putts down the track and ends up near the top. Pull it and enjoy

If it has never been bored, go with.045" over with aluminum pistons. I don't think I would go shaving the head alot or anything just for dead weight. Also, leave the cam stock unless it is wore bad. If you have square rear axle housings you most likely have a 50-51-52 model, go to the serial numbers guide on this site to say for sure. I've had alot of experience on A's and 60's and I hope this will help . p.s. the straight 6 speed is a good model to pull. Hey Burns, what's up? I almost have the 60 done 2-3 more weeks maybe.

If you want to dead weight don't do anything to her. Come out light on the gas and let her chug.Have pulled on a A where we never touch the gas.If you want to see the best dead weighters come to the Warren and Van Buren area of Indiana. We have the longest running dead weight pull in the world on Labor Day.
