I've tried posting on the Farmall board, but get no replies. I'm in the process of rebuilding a '44 "M" engine and was wondering how much I can safely deck the head, using the IH Firecrater pistons, before motor begins to detonate? In terms of airflow, how much head porting should be done and on which side (int / exh)? Should the stock manifold be replaced for max power? What cams are recommended? I am hoping to make 65 hp +/- that is 'user-friendly'. Been a long-time Deere & Moline puller that would like to make a stout but friendly "M" Thanks! (Any suggestions, for power are certainly appreciated)

Get your pistons and find an lp head, get your carb built, and either buy a header or find an lp manifold and you will be sitting on 65 hp no problem. If you find an lp head then just cut enough off it to true it up and do a little polishing and valve job.I know a guy who has a stock cam pulling 65 hp.Good luck.

What would a guy expect to pay for one of the LP heads? Who would a guy call to find one? Many thanks

The only way to find one that I have seen is to go to some pulls and talk to some of the IH boys and ask.I guarentee somebody knows of one somewhere. It may be expensive but one sold last summer for 500 bucks exchange. It needed working but it helped tremendously on the hp.

Someone once told me that the LP head would not work with the Firecrater pistons due to clearance problems, is that true?
A guy that pulls with our club has an LP head and was offered $2500 for it. Pretty expensive part and getting very hard to find.
