Building a mild H

Have heard you can bore out the block of a H ( I have a '40' ) and put sleeves and pistons from a 350 in. ( 3 5/8"? ) Is it true? What all has to be done? Dont want to go into stroking it.

Bore the block to either run the pistons on the block, or bore the block to accept the 350 sleeves. One note,, the wrist pin diamters are not the same between the H-350, the H has a bigger wrist pin than the 350, so either use 350 rods, or have brass bushings made to adapt the 350 pistons to the H rods. and just in that bushing,, there is alot of HP hiding there. Thought you could still get those wristpin bushings from IH or Tisco?I know you can still get them for an M to 450.

Yeah you can still get the stock ones, I make custom wrist pin bushings to adapt the 450 piston pins to the M rod. You can set compression hieght differently, and gain a lot of compression. You have to cut down the tops of the pistons, to compensate how much you raise the piston on the rod. ChadS

Yes,that will definitely help, but why not put some stroke in it? That is where your power is at. Once you pull down the engine, you need that stroke to keep going. That's where your lugging power comes in. If your going to bore it anyway, now is the time! If you ever decide down the road to stroke it, then your bore job will be wasted because typically you have to change wrist pin height to make your stroke work to your advantage.That's my opinion,anyway! Anybody else? country boy.

Dont have the money to stroke it, have heard between the crank / rods / pistons.....talking in the neighborhood of $2000. I am just looking at an overbore and a valve job, nothing else. This tractor may see 2-4 pulls a year, nothing serious. I have heard one guy around here has over $10,000 in the motor alone....runs like it to....lol. How much HP can one be looking at with just the 350 sleve and pistons? Any other modifications need to be done other than the piston pin dia. difference, as in maybe different sleeve length or will it fit right in after boring the block?

You can have a pretty stout H for 2000 dollars. A lot less $$ actually. You just need to know what parts to use to accomplish your goal. There is 3 different combinations for a stock stroke engine to make more HP and torque, it is all done with the pistons and rods, and the cyl head and carb. With just the 350 kit, you are looking at 43-45 hp with the H head, and H carb and intake, and H cam. Now, put on a late model cyl head, cam, and carb and intake, 45-50 hp easy. and that is all bolt on parts, no wild machine work there at all. You can stroke the engine, and still be with in your budget, you dont need the 350 kit to do this, I have pistons that work for 3-9/16 bore, and up to 5 inch stroke. Usually the crank is around 1000 dollars to have one made, sure, there is others that do good work for a lower price, just have to shop around. this route, you may be with in $2500 tops, just depends on how much you do. With the 350 kit you should be able to make power comparable to a 350. One thing though, your '40 H probably has a kerosene or distilate head on it. Spend a few bucks on a high comp gas head, maniflold, and SH-350 carb. If at all possible find somebody who knows how to really dyno tune a tractor, and find out what the tractor likes best in regards to timing and fuel.
