I'm looking into getting into pulling within a couple years. I'm going to be building a 1600 oliver gasser. I'm new at any of this. I would like the tractor to be driveable for light pulling around the farm but competitive on the track. I'm looking for some good advice. Is this even a good machine to go with. It's got the cast centers on the rear wheels so those probably have to go but I would like to keep the fenders and other items on it if it's feasible. I'll take any advice right now. There are a lot of ways to go right now since the engine doesn't run now and will get torn down anyway. Just tell me what I should scrap, add or keep to make this fun and not an embarrasment to the oliver name. Thanks in advance.

It all depends on your local rules and what weight class you want to pull in. If they allow you to use the hydrapower it is very nice to have around the farm and during some pulls. If you want to stay near stock use the 3 7/8" bore piston & sleeve set. Anything that can be done to an 88 engine can be done to the 1600 engine.

What weight class do you want to be able to pull in? What horsepower level are you looking for?

Hi Mark. If you're gonna rebuild the original engine, I'd suggest Oliver 1750 pistons and liners. It also helps to shave the head some, this'll raise compression. Don't shave too much though, Cam 2 or racing fuel is pricy to use on the farm! I also custom built an adjustable pulling hitch for my 1600 to hook as high and close to the rear axle as the rules allow. I added front and side weight brackets on my 1600. We've pulled the stock classes from #6500 to #9000 with good success. Hope this helps, good luck, Don
