What starter works best for a big G ? I have seen the 4430 type starter used or the gear reduction starters like on the 8000 series tractors. Is there any modification needed to install either one ? Thanks

A friend of mine had a 4430-type starter on his 700+ cube "G". It would start it, but not always the best. I loaned him a gear-drive unit off an 8400 to try and apparently it works like a charm. Probably more money than the Bobcat one that's been mentioned, although you could probably buy a used one from Abilene or something, but the Deere starter also doesn't require any modification, and a starter built to crank a 496-cube 8000 engine is probably going to be a little stouter internally than one built for a Bobcat.

There is a starter shop near here that takes a new replacement starter for a 753 bobcat and changes the drive in them that works great runs around $250.00 I have one on a G with 125 over high compression pistons that starts real good with out opening the petcocks and a friend has one on an A thats stroked to 9 inches starts it real good also.

If you get BobCat starter number 410-12139 all you have to do is bolt it on. No modifications are needed to this number. I have one on 3 different big motor JD's and they do a good job.

I put a starter on my 600+ cubic inch G from about a 1997 Power Stroke Diesel. It's a Mitsubishi reduction gear starter. All I had to do was change the starter drive. The bolt pattern was exactly the same as the orginal starter. I am
running two batteries, but the trucks ran two 12
volt bateries also. The tractor has around 9-1 compression, and this set up cranks it over real
well. I don't know the part number for the starter drive, but I probably could find out. My local starter and alternator shop did this for me.

I've got the Bobcat starter on one of my G's like Bamapuller was talking about. Mine is 537 cube running about 11:1 compression and with a 925 cranking amp battery it does pretty good. Not the best, but a lot better than the factory starter which left me having to pull my tractor off a lot.
