1938 G Questions

1: looking for a place to get a new head gasket for a flat head 1938 G John Deere.
2: looking to get this tractor set up for pulling next year, This is a bone stock tractor right know, (standard bore even). looking for recomdations. I pull in stock classes.

Head gasket part #F487R from Deere for $51.00 list. You'll also need the lead washers and other assorted gaskets. You could also purchase the F1075R valve, ring and cylinder replacement kit for $160.00 list that will have everything you need in one package. Deere recently bumped the prices on a lot of their gasket sets for the old tractors, unfortunately for you. It used to be that they were generally cheaper than the aftermarket ones, but everybody figured OEM would be more expensive and never bothered checking with Deere.

Not to depute G-man's word but, I think the early head gasket number is F55R. It was still avalible from JD, but is always back ordered at the branch houses. A pulling buddy just got 1 from K&K in Shelbyville, IN. Their phone # is 317-398-9883. Good folks to deal with and fast service. My friend had his in a couple or 3 days.

F55R is no longer a good part number, as per Deere EPC. F1307R appears to be the sub for that number, and is also the "70" all-fuel gasket. It appears to be still available slightly cheaper than the gasket I listed in my post, but the one I listed appears to be the latest and greatest version.

john deere does not carry the head gasket for the G's before serial number 13,000 if you order that part number you will get the newer model. I heard of a place in colorado that makes them, does anyone have any info on them?

As JDGnut said below, the later gasket will work on the earlier tractors, just as you can bolt an unstyled "flat" head on a styled tractor. The head bolt patterns are the same, as is the bore and everything else. You'll find that often - a later part number that became the service part for and supercedes an earlier number.

As far as #2 goes, find you a block from a later styled series tractor. It is 1 inch shorter. Also find some gas pistons. The size of the pistons doesn't matter that much, just as long as they're gas high compression. With those and the shorter block it'll bump your compression up a bunch and you'll be well into the 50's on your horsepower. Hand cranking will be difficult but not impossible.

I had it on a dino and at a good lug it is getting 54hp at 540 rpm it was 46hp right know it is difficult to start.

Not sure what your plans are.. but if you are going to stroke it.. or use different rods I would not get rid of the Long block.. if no stroking or welding of the rods.. than maybe look at the short block.

I do have a 48 G that is in parts right know i was thinking of putting that block on the 38 G or would you recommened using the original block and put high compresion pistons? Or put the 48 block on and high compresion pistons? thanks for the info on the newer head gasket working on the 38 G with a flat head. any recomendations are helpful. I do have a Jerrys manifold already on it.

It all depends on how much you want to spend.. and how far you are going to go with the tractor.. Cheapest way to get fair HP, would be to use the short block with the High compression pistons and use the flathead.. (the head might need a little work.) That would be a done deal.. If you are going to stroke it.. or going to weld the rods and use different pistons the longer block is the better block to use.. the longer you can make the rod.. the better.. Also some rules/clubs might say something about the short block in the Unstyled G.. but most don't care.. as long as U are not in stock class.. most won't even notice.. (the spark plugs are the easiest give away..) You could always get the high compression pistons and run it in the 38.. and if you don't like it.. move it to the 48.. and try something else.. You will not be happy with just the high compression pistons in the long block.. (not for a puller.) Drop me an email... JDGnut
