Thinking of trying to locate a 44d. Do a little local pulling and using it on the farm also. Rake, square bale ect. Want a row crop tractor. Also will turning up the pump help the power much. Love that black smoke. Thanks

I wouldnt get a 44 diesel due to that they are hard starting they always got hot in the summer after pulling a load. I had one and it went through head gaskets like nothing. I had that tractor for about 4 years and went through about 6 head gaskets. You could never get very much power out of them cause if you turned the pump way up the power would go down cause it would flood the engine you could probably get about 3-4 horsepower more when you turn the pump just a little bit. But if you want to pull and use it on the farm i would go with a gas 44 .

Carl is right. The 44 D suffers from the Lanova system that was popular in that era. It flooded because the fuel and air could not come fast enough out of the energy cell.

Was the injection set-up poor or could not get enough air? Is there anything that can be done to help the problems. I want to stay with a diesel. Thanks.

Not really because the whole set up on the diesel is bad!! You could do some minor things to maybe improve it a little bit but if you havent already bought one then i would try to stay away from them as much as possible. If you really want a good running diesel get a Cockshutt 50 Diesel them were a good tractors cause they never really had any problems. You can turn them up and get good power out of them cause i had one one time and had 6,000 hours on the pistons and i put new rings in it. I also messed with the pump a little bit and i had 65 hp and worked with it around the farm and i pulled it and never had a bit of trouble with it. Them also have a very low gear in them if you want to pull it they used to win almost all the time in the block pulling.

Yep I had a 44 d also and mine went through two head gaskets in less than a year! So i traded it off and got me a 444 gas what a difference that 44 d never had very much power at all . I felt like my pulling power alot better with the 444. When I had my 44 diesel I pulled it all it would do i smoke it would never lug very good and i worked and worked and all i could get out of it was 50 hp. So bob I dont think you are on the right track with a 44 d.
