Thinking about the Ford Duraspark system on my 460, the system I have has 3 wires, one for the coil, a power wire, and the distributor trigger wire. Now the question is, can I use the point contacts to use as the trigger device, or does it have to have the Hall effect style pick up in the distributor? Chads

Hmmm...Here's another option in reply to ChadS, 09-28-2004 11:13:00
...because I'm not 1000% sure I'm correct here...but I think you do need the Hall effect style pickup to make the Duraspark work.

Here's what I'm working on for my truck ('51 IH converted to 12V)...the hot setup for the truck sixes, I've been told, is to take the HEI distributor from a Chevy 250 six from the late '70's...shorten the shaft and notch it for the oil pump drive...and then--since the Chevy engine spins the distributor the opposite way as International--swap out the vacuum advance with one from an Olds V8 of approximately the same vintage--since the Olds and IH distributors both rotate the same direction--so the advance will actually advance the distributor, rather than retard the timing. I'm told "some modification is required" to use the Olds vacuum advance...I intend to find out as soon as the guy at work who has the junkyard brings me in the HEI unit.

Since you obviously won't need the vacuum advance working in your 460, you can eliminate that step...and I've heard that the shaft modifications only take a few minutes (less than 30, if you don't spill your coffee and hafta refill)...and it's a 2-wire setup, if I recall.

For converting an IH V8 distributor to Duraspark internals--and I suspect the 460 might convert as easily as the V8's--try www.binderbulletin.com , and then check out the FAQ section.

Long-winded, but I hope it's helpful.
