Question for Unstyled A pullers: The tractor has about 50hp at PTO and weighs 4200 lbs with driver (I weigh 230lbs). Mostly original except for engine. Looking for a ballpark setup for 4500 and 5000 lb classes. Hitch 20" high x 18" from center of axle. 1 weight bracket behind seat and 1 weight bracket 2" ahead of the front tires. Older 14.9x38 Firestone 45 degree angle tires on pressed steel rims - 5psi. Pulling a standard weight transfer skid with 5 mph speed limit. I've never pulled this tractor before (first pull this weekend - just bought it - I have pulling experience but not with a 2 cyl Unstyled John Deere) and don"t know a lot about this tractor. I want the front end to be light but not too light. Also will it work to pull it in 2nd gear in both classes on a good traction track. I was thinking of going with all weight on the back in both classes and 2nd gear in both classes (maybe 1-100lb in front for the 5000lb class). I realize there are a lot of unknown variables here but, if you could, just give me your best guess on weight placement, gear, and anything else that would help out. Thanks in advance. Kevin

kev..i run a 36a with 20 inch and 15.5 or 14.9 cuts..have water in front tires and at 4600 lb. put anywhere from 120 lb on a soft track to 320 lb. on a track that gets good traction..most tracks run around 220 lb..i run from 10 lb. to 13 lb. air pressure..sled chain is medium long and sometimes hooked in low hole and some in high hole on sled..with a loose track you maybe can run 2nd in 4500 but other than that it is low gear..lynn

I pull a 36 A in 4500 and 5500 antique i run the stock drawbar assembly ,but have a curved bar when needed 20". I have cut offs all way round with 12.4 36 feild & roads and run about 30 HP.It weighs about 3900 with 2oo# driver i do have some steel blocks i tool box but not a lot.4500 I'll put even number 100 lbs on the back and 5500 i'll fill the back 600 lbs each side the remander on the belly.Belly bracket you can face IH 100 facing in front or to the back of bar ,It helps on the different track condtions.I do have to small brackets in front of the rear axle that will hold 300 a side for loose tracks.it will get light some times and wheelie some. Its a fun tractor it'll suprise some people plus me at times. It did a litte better with drawbar out rather than all in.I dont know how long the chain is on the sled i pull on .Hope this is right dad pulled it this summer. 36 A

Front weight might depend on the length of the sled chain. If it's about 48" and the track is good you might need around 100 lbs on the front in the 4500, and if that works add another 10-125 for the 5000# class. As far as 2nd gear, unless the track is REALLY loose use 1st gear 'cause it ain't gonna hack 2nd with 50 HP. 70-75 Hp is the minimum you need for 2nd gear. My $.02 Mike

Think your 5psi may be a little low. You don't want the tires to cup in the middle. With the tractor on a smooth surface (shop floor or on your trailer)with a tire lug BDC, air it up until 1/4 to 1/2 inch is off the surface at the every outside end of the lug. As you add weigh and with the down force on the rear tires as you pull the sled, the tires will squat some. When you spin out, check the bottom of the holes. If its pretty flat then your air is about right for that track. If the spin out holes are rounded then you have too much air. If the holes are deeper on the outside and shallow in the middle (cupped) then your air is too low. JD 2cyl. row crop tractors are light on the front compared to other name brand tractors, because of the way the rearend, transmission and motor are configured. Unstyled are especially light. JD's usually need more weight on the front than others. A good rule of thumb is: short chain put it on the front(weight)--long chain put it on the back. Good luck and post back after your pull.
