I have an H head with #8043 is this a gas head or an all fuel ?what # sould I look for?

8043 is the high compression gas head for the H, and super H, there was two versions of the 8043 cyl head, First was 8043D, which was used up unitl 52 when the Super H came out in 53, IH came out with the C-164, which all had 8043DD castings until late 54 and in 55 the 300 came out with the newest casting number, yet, the 8043DD and the 300 C-169(361479r) were identical. The differences are the following, 8043D (early version) had a slightly larger chamber, and is not compatible with fire crater pistons, in the compression chamber, on the later heads, they recasted the chamber design with a slight slant on one side, to allow more room for the fire craters to move, and to create a burn path for the crater design piston. the 8043D also has a difference in valve length. The intake runners are more closed VS the later cyl heads. The later heads, 8043DD and up, were identical, (gas heads, not LP) the intake runners are more open, less restricted, (when you look into the port, you can actually see down inside both valves) and are slightly larger in port size, not much,, maybe 1/8 inch bigger VS the older heads. They are fire crater piston friendly, and the highest compression gas head casting you could ask for. besides the LP head. Now,, you asked what to look for,, I got caught up in this few weeks back,, if you intend on pulling this tractor,, check the rules to see what is allowed as far as engine modifications,, some dont allow later model parts on older tractors, kinda keeps the stockers stock I guess. My opinion, if the rules let ya,, is the 8043DD which is found off the Super H C-164, with the proper machine work, can match the out put of the LP head. Hope this helps,, any questions? ChadS

yes. It does not take much to grind out the side of the chamber, I have done this to an H with the 350 kit with the old head. Either that, or grind the pistons down a bit, never said it would not work, just takes a bit of clearing. he old head chamber,, was for the stepped head pistons, which either had a rectangular shape dome on them, or a half moon shape dome. Firecraters,, have a taller top edge at the top of the crater, (not the taller side, the lower part) it is taller than the old piston, so, the chamber had to be opened up to clear them. Chad

Ih changed the cyl heads in the M in late 51, and when the super M came out, they had the same head castings as the 400-450, and had the same features I mentioned about the H-350 heads. New style M heads, the best ones were the 8060DD, Which, just like the H, had the extra "D" in the casting number to determine it was a later model cyl head design with the old casting number, before they changed the casting numbers for the 400. They were found on the Super M (8060dd) Compared to the 400-450 (362174r) were identical castings. Just the older casting number. "D" is the older heads, DD is the newer casting, and the "R" codes on the heads were the latest model cyl head. ChadS

Chad not saying you're right or wrong,just asking questions to learn.If a 8060DD and 362174
head are the same,why does the 8060DD and 8060DC
ETC. use the same valves and 362174 use shorter valves? Not sure about change in 51,worked on several SM with correct date code most 1953 and 8060DC heads.Also I think 8574DC is near same head as 8060DD. Thanks Dave

All of the 8060, and like heads do have the same valve length, longer than the newer head. So, yes a correction from my post. The compression chamber design, and ports are more open and straight thru, like the newer heads. Also, when the firecrater pistons came out, the older heads could not use them, unless, the heads were ground out to make them clear the pistons. So, a casting change was in order. Now, in answer to why the valve length did not change in the 8060s in the later years, and this is just a guess,, the Super M, came out in early 52, IH never changed the valves in any of the heads until 53-54. First one to have a valve length change was the super H. After that, then they started doing the same modifications for the Super M getting ready to make the MTA, and 400. I guess I can also say is that the years I stated for the heads are off by 2 years,, Forgetting that there was one more model inbetween the super M, and the 400, and that was the MTA. Which would probably be where to find the older casting # with the better flow design and chamber. Most better parts I have found came from the 52-56 production years. Possibly the 8574D is the late head before the 362174?? ChadS

Must be nice!!! LOL, There is no auto/truck LP fuel stations around here in Northern Indiana, unless you patronize the bulk dealers who sell it, then, they add on an extra charge to fill a vehicle, and not a barbeque tank, or home tanks. ChadS

LOL I understand that. We have a 500 gallon tank here at home, truck has 2 84 gallon tanks on it, then we mounted a 250 nurse tank under the tail section of our semi trailer. Good range between stops. Tim

You need a rice burner so that you can hop from one state to another to assist pullers without starting a gas crisis! I got a new front weight bracket on the H (all aluminum) to try out this Saturday. With 100# it extends 10' & 11 13/4" from center of rear axle. I have to watch when I drive into the shop now!

Traveling Mechanic! Hey, I have done that! Loved to travel and meet lots of pullers out there. I have been on any road trips lately, last one I went to Lousiville KY, tuned up an M. Usually, they had their own dyno, and was pretty close as far as setting the carbs, but once I got to tinkering around with it, they found out that those little, hidden parts, the ones that are overlooked so much, makes all the difference inthe world.
