Well opinions are like (you know what) and everybody's got one. So here is my opinion on this. First decide what division you want to pull in as it will make a difference on what to build and the amount of money to do so. For a Division Two I would say the later "B" would be the more the economical route to go because with slower speed limits and its low gearing you won't need near the HP, that a Division Three tractor will require. If a Division Three is what you want to do I think the later "B" is way to heavy per HP to ever compete with what you will be up against. Better off using an early model "B" tractor that is much lighter to begin with and build the HP into it as you would have to do with the later one anyway. You will not have to deal with near the amount of weight reduction to get it into a lighter class where it will be better HP matched to other tractors. I tell people that you got to have enough HP to pull the maximum amount of speed allowed and be able to maintain that speed through the length of the pass to be competitive. Yes I know that a creeper gear will win one once in awhile under the right conditions but if you want to stay near the top consistently, speed is a big factor and to maintain the speed it will take some power to do it. I also will say that winning consistently is not only HP, speed and dollars even though that is part of it, it also takes all the other factors too like track reading, balance, hitch set up and a little common sense. Good Luck on what ever you decide, DW
