I have never used a set of dials to do this, I just got one, so I may give them a try! I would say that it is along the same lines for procedure to make the adjustment. I think either way is good to practice. This is a shortcut I use, cause I did not have an indicator,, LOL. Really, when I tried this the first time, I was trying to get my modified H's cam lash dialed in so I would not bend the push rods, and not click from having to run them loose. At stock lash the intakes were held open, and the exhaust were too loose. SO, I had no idea on where to set the lash for the aftermarket cam grind. Before, just set em at .025 on both and let it click. Never liked doing that, but it did not seem to hurt,, till one day I was sick of the click, and sat down and figured the cam out. I had no tools of the trade, so I used my compression guage, and set them to where they were tight, but no binding, or holding them open. Found out,, that the cam had 2 different lash settings for the intakes and the exhaust. One needed more than the other to get peak pressure in the cyl. but yeah, I cranked that engine for a while to get them right. I picked up 25 psi in all the cyls after I was done,, going from 275psi up to 300 psi from a lash adjustment was OK with me!! I could not belive that it was throwing the engine off that much by not having the cam dialed in. Like I said, I just got a dial indicator, I havent tried to use it just yet, but, I think I will! I think I will also keep the compression guage handy, check my work when I am done. Really, that is what I use the compression guage for,, to check for differences in pressures from adjustments.
