Would it harm a 51B JD to run it in tractor pulls with no oil in the filter? Would it have more power? Thx

You're going to lose some hp going through that system even without oil. Some people take the intake pipe off, flip it over and use some type of paper filter.

Just a suggestion - You may want to remove the canister from the casting (leaving the airpipe through the hood) and run a paper replaceable or washable (K&N) dry-type element up under the hood. You're on the right track, those oil-bath units can become clogged and do not offer the greatest HP performance, but I really don't want to see you sucking up dust/dirt right into your engine. You have to remember - an engine is alomost like a high-power vacuum cleaner - it'll suck anything up.

I've run the dry washable for years and have been very happy with the performance. If you're not afraid to experiment, you can take the casting off and make your filter suck that it breathes from a stock-appearing airpipe above the hood, letting the cooler air in & helping to make a denser air/fuel charge. Good Luck

phil, the john deere enginers know their stuff, when thay made these tractors. I think it is great you have a 51 b still running, i would be happy just knowing that. you go messing with things and you will only harm your tractor. that filter does what it was designed to do keep dirt out of your engine. mabe if you take it off it may give some more horses, and if that is worth a engine and bragging rights for a county fair ribbon go for it. don't get me wrong there are enginers out there that can make changes to these tractors but thay have the know how and shops to do this without harm to the tractor at a cost of course. merrill

All i do is wash and burn the steel filter inside my oil bath out nice and clean and than fill it full of menthol hydrate. MY 880 will suck it right dry in one full pull and it really boosts the horse power. Use a glass container breather cap with the fine screen on the pipe above your hood. And dont site around in the dust with your tractor idling LOL
