I am getting ready to start building a super M to pull in the open classes, and have a few questions. I was told you can remove the sleeves and bore too 4.375 and use chevy pistons. Is this true? I would also like to stroke the crank to the limit without having to do alot of grinding and clerence work. How much can I go? and last but not least what kind of rods can I use or will I need to have some made? Thanks for your help Chris

I put a 4.25 x 6.25 M together with a buddy last summer. Bore the block to 4.25 and have the crank stroked an inch. Use pistons out of a chevy six cylinder. You will have to clearance the rods from the cylinders and the cam. Very inexpensive build. Pistons didn"t cost anything and we bought a stroked crank for $600.00. We dyno"d the tractor after it was together and it was around 85 horse with a 400 head. I am sure with some good tuning he could get more out of it he was just to busy kickin" butt in the 3 mph class. Good horsepower to traction ratio with 14.9 tires.

5 3/4 or 6" strokes are nice and fairly easy to do. As for you rods you should be able to use or stock or find some 400 or 450 rod there a little lighter. you'll have to decide on your stroke first and piston combination and go from there with the rod. I would plan on using you stock length rod and and work a piston around that. Chads should be able to help you out though. I thought i would give a little fuel for thought.

How exactly does the crank get stroked? I know that it is offset ground, but is it built up on the opposite side, or do you use smaller bearings? This sounds like it could get expensive... thanks, FD

I have built 5.75 x 4.25 using m and w sleeve and piston.Fell together, huge bottom end andaproaching 90 hp.Greatcombo Too bad pistons no longer available.Also built 4.32 x6.25 custom made pistons stock rods, not enough meat in block to just bore and go.MAJOR grinding on rods alsoground on cam.I would suggest custom made rods.Yes you have to weld the crank,and yes it gets expensive at least for an old country boy.

Pistons are available for 5-3/4 cranks still, they are not factory, they are made, but 4-1/8th bore, so you dont have to bore it out if you choose not to. Biggest stroke for these pistons are 6 inches. But they have the big domes on em, not hard to get over 10 to 1 with these pistons. ChadS

Chad s What piston do you start with? Are you moving the pin, or just modfying the rod?Could you possibly post a picture top and side view?Thanks.

I remachine new high domed pistons for the added stroke. I use them from 5.25 stroke up to 6 inch stroke, I have to relocate the wrist pin postiton at 6 inches. I went with 4-1/8, so you dont have the expence of boring out the block,, or ruining a block by running with out sleeves, inthe 264-281 engines. M's,, just pull the sleeve and its 4-1/8 bore.
