Working on a 40 A that has poor throttle response. If you give it full throttle from idle it slowly comes up to rated rpm. Was sure that the problem was in the governor, so pulled that and nothing wrong in there. Check all linkages for binding, all o.k. In an automobile I would say it was timed retarded. Any suggestions..Russ

jdman Try disconecting the rod between the governor and the carb, then manually operate the butterfly on the carb. If the engine responds ok the problem is in the governor. If the engine still won"t respond I would suspect the problem to be carb or ignition related. Just something to narrow the problem down. Mike

Tried that before the tear down and the engine responded fine. Wonder if the governor spring is to stout, noticed there was a piece of broke spring under the bolt when I took it apart. This is not my tractor so no nothing about its previous history, other than it set in a field for 5 years.Russ

I have added a piece of spring against the old one to gain throttle response.A weak throttle spring will make it slow responding. While you have it just above idle try advancing the distributor and see if that helps. If it has a magneto take it off and look behind it and see if the coil spring is broke in the magneto. If it has been sitting it may be rusted up or possibly broke. If it is broke it will make it sluggish.Let us know what you find.Jack(TN).

Thanks for your response, Got it all back together last night, not much improvement,I now suspect the carb, since it will gradually gain rpm without touching the throttle. Does not idle very good. going to take the carb off my 38 A which I know is good and see what happens. Went thru Mag it is o.k. The carb was in terrible shape when I started out, I did the best I could with it but did not send it out. Russ
