I recently had a M engine bored (4 3/8 in.)and completely hard blocked. Naturally, I am only able to run water through the head now. I took out the thermostat, but she seems to heat up awful quick and I am wondering how hot this engine will get in the summer heat after a run or two down the track. I understand that back to back pulls may not be possible without some cooling down time in between. Has anyone out there had similar issues with hard blocked engines? Any suggestions for more efficient engine cooling under these circumstances? Many thanks

All of the mentioned will help your heat problems, another item to look at is the fuel, it may be running a bit on the laen side causing an extra 30-50 degrees hotter inside the cyl VS one that has the right fuel and jetting for the engine displacement. Look at the spark plugs, if they are lite in color, a bit more fuel can help cool it down. If it has over 200 psi of compression, you need a minumum of 100 octane, but no racing gas!!! Try to find a slower burning fuel, ethanol maybe?? Anything you can do to cool the air fuel charge going into the venturi will reduce engine temp, if it is a fuel problem. I run my H with darn near full hard block,, and it has not got over 200 degrees. Even on the dyno. But the fuel helps keep it cooler too,, JMHO, ChadS

I run a solid block engine on gas, it gets hotter ideling than it does pulling when there is a huge volume of air flowing through it, put the water in the front of the head and drill and tap the rear and return the water to the top of the radiator, get a head gasket maid with no water holes in it. I do not run any pressure, head is to thin, just looking for more problems. I have ran up to 3 pulls back to back and had no cooling problems

As Cody said, you need a return from your head if you don't have one. I believe you'll want your thermostat back in but remove the thermostatic element. You need to restrict the water flow. If the water flows too fast it doesn't cool properly. You'll want an electric water pump and fan to circulate and cool while in the pits. You may want an oil temp. gauge. You DEFINITELY want a good battery(s) and starter. Being hard-blocked it's a different animal. When you pull on the scales to weigh and measure hitch, shut it off (to avoid overheating) after you move up in line to pull shut it off, etc. you get the picture, lots of stops and starts.

Tap a hole in the back of the head and run a 1/2" hose to the return on the radiator. This will help eliminate the hot spot that can't circulate through the block. It should solve most of your overheating problem. Also a pressurized cooling system will help too.

I am running a stock water pump for now. Thanks for all the help men. I think I need to drill and tap for a hose running from the rear of the head to the radiator.

On my head, I just put a T in the hole for the temp guage, hoohed temp on one side and ran the other to the radiator. Seems to work fine. Also using electric water pump and fan
