We have 2 Ford SD with powerstrokes, 2002 with 7.3 and 45000 miles and a 2004 with a 6.0 and 13000 miles both have been great without any problems, the 6.0 will run away from the 7.3 loded with 16000lb trailer or empty, we have friends with Gm and dodge trucks that had the same good results so pick what you like they all must be good have 100000 mile backing.

I have no complaints with my '02 Ford, I beat the build date and got 275 horse power with a manual trans for hauling hay. I'm a diesel mechanic durring the day, and farmer at night. Best engine, Cat. Which ever manufacture can convince them to put an engine in their frame will have the best selling truck ever. Allison is a very good auto trans, but my preference for pulling is a manual. The six speed in my Ford is easy to drive and with the low gear and 4x4 low range I can move my gooseneck in soft fields loaded with round bales very easily. I just don't think an auto trans would like it.

Well I just thought I would see how much had changed sine the old add was posted back in '01. The Chevy Duramax didn't make the grade then. Since then it looks like they have changed some people. I have to say I like all three and have drove all three loaded (I mean loaded)and unloaded. They all have their good and bad points. I own and drive a '04 2500HD 4X4 4-d Duramax/Allison auto and so far I like it the best. I wished it had a 265 or 275 tire and straight front axle. For me I think that I have the best of all worlds with the quiet engine, ride, looks, and power. As time goes along one of the big 3 will bring on something else.

Love my new duramax. First thing I did was stop at the tire dealer and trade in the 245,s for 285 Wranglers. 6 turns on the front torsion bars gives it a nicer stance. Had to trim a little of the plastic inner linner so the tires didn't rub when turning [about 2" off of the corner, you can't tell by looking at it]. I have the same set up on my 2000 Silverato and like it real well.

A little tip for you Chevy guys. If you want to raise the front end of your truck, take a jack and jack up the frame enough to take the pressure off the front tires. Under the front door is what looks like a long rod. Using a socket or wrench turn clock ways the amount you desire. Most GM people tell me 5-6 complete turns is about all you can go without having to re aline the front end. Tightening up the bars will give you a stiffer ride though. You will also have less body roll when cornering. You can do the whole process in about 10 minutes. You can also try different settings [say 3 turns] untill you find the height and ride you like. This will not affect the warranty like a lift kit.

You asked about the best truck but listed engines. The best truck is a ford. Why, Leaf sprung solid axles front and back, strongest frame, best interior room, sits up nice and high, and in my opinion the sharpest truck.

Motors, the best motor is the Cummins hands down. If you disagree fine but be honest with yourself look at pulling and performace trucks they all have Cummins power because they are the best. The 7.3 liter PowerStroke is one tough motor too. It has been around for 10 years and has more than proven itself. Powerstroke started the horsepower race. The new 6.0 Powerstroke and the Duramax have alot to prove. Both have had problems with the injectors but they can make some really good power. Apparently in 2007 Ford is coming out with a new 6.7 liter powerstroke. Hopefully it with have the servo actuated valves that IH has been developing for years.

Automatic trans, if you know performance and strenght the Ford 4R100 is the best. It is tough to start out with and can be built bullet proof. I know Allison has been around forever but the Allison sitting behind the Duramax still has alot to prove. Dodge has never built a good Auto transmission and until the engineers at Chrysler get there heads out of there rear they never will.

What do I drive - 99 F-350 Powerstroke with auto trans. Yes I cried when the 6.0 came out. why couldn"t they just put 32 valves on the 7.3. I pull 2 to 3 tractors on my 30 ft gooseneck and don"t hesitate to load it to 25,000 lbs.

Current project - stuffing a Cummins with a 4R100 into a 79 F-350.

That was more than my $0.02.

You said a lot sir and I agree with you 100%. I am a Chevy guy, but it"s best to let new engines prove themselves. Fords sit nice and are built heavy, I think Chevy is nicest looking with neat and clean cut looks, and Dodge is smart enough to use the toughest diesel out there but not smart enough to fix their bad reputation for crap trannys. Put a big stick in a GMC with a 800 propane M-M engine, and I would buy it. Only kidding. My 1973 Ford F-250 Camper Special with 390 and stick will get me by a few more years.

duramax w/allison are a great great combo. they use the same block(different injectors etc but same block) in the big kodiaks and c6500's so obviously itll handle it. allison is pobably the most famous in heavy automatic transmissions. the truck has tons of aftermarket options out there as well. the injectors pump come with a 5 yr 100,000 mile warrenty. theyve had alot of problems with the 6.0 and always had trany poblems. the cummins motor is a great motor tad small but great motor however the truck will deteriorate around the motor. the motor is great in dodge but the rest of the truck tranny etc is junk

We have a 03" Duramax with Allison tranny, it has a programmer on it now, but we roll across the scales weighing between 26,000 to about 31,000 depending on what were hauling. I had my doubts about the duramax but its proven itself. Also in my opinion the GM trucks ride better. But thats just my opinion. 52 A Boy

You really didnt specify what years you are looking at. If older than 2002 than Maybe the duramax w/allison, early duramax's had injector problems, mostly caused by fuel from my understanding, but problems none the less. It also seems that GM extended the warrenty on injectors for quite a few miles... not sure maybe someone on here can speek up. Older FORDS (man hard to say this) with the 7.3 power stroke are good trucks, but they have transmission problems also. I would stay away from tho new 6.0 powerstrokes, seems to be lots of probs. The old stye Dodges are solid to, autos do seem to hold up at stock power levels but thats it. I drive a 2002 2500 HO w/6 speed(no mods yet). It pulls my Oliver 1650 down the road nicely. With trailer and mower and tractor your looking at right around 13.5K.
All the new trucks now have common rail injection, which means HIGH dollar injectors, not good in my book but its where we are going. The new Dodges are a very good truck with a very solid transmission, the old one wasn't really bad, Its just that the Cummins is SOOOO easy and cheep to get power out of that the transmissions capablities were quickly exceeded. GM is currently having the SAME problem with the allison, in stock trim its right at the desigen edge for power. They are good, but not trouble free by anymeans.
All of'em have +'s and -'s, pick you poisen and enjoy. You will have a hard time going back to a gas truck once you use a Diesel. Good luck

Best engine may be cummins but the best combination is duramax and allison transmission in my opinion. The turning radius and overall body construction probably goes to GM as well.

I had a 93 Dodge with the Cummins, nothing but tranny problems until we put a Jasper unit in. Game over. Sold the truck to a friend, it now has over 300,000 miles on it. He's not afraid at all to put his fifth wheel to AZ from MN and back. I drove one of the first Dodge HD, cab and box much smaller, rode like a dump truck. Ending up getting one of the last 7.3's built, didn't like NEW engine and trans. Boy am I glad. Pull 12000# Fifthwheel or gooseneck with G and A plus weights or push snow. Superchips programmer and 4" exhust. 70-75 mph. No problems!

I do have to say that I have another truck that has worked out very well for our every day use. It is a 98 Freightliner C60 low pro. 5.9 cummings with the allison auto. We put a 9ft flat bed on it with a gooseneck ball. The air brakes, engine, and trans make for a good truck that is fun to drive.

Wow, I must say that I am impressed by the replies on here. Nobody did the typical response with the "this is the brand I use, so it is the best, end of discussion" that is so typical whenever people post about John Deere vs. IH! People simply posted what works or didn't work for them, and conceded points to the different brands. Like all things, there is no clear cut answer, as each persons application has different needs. This is what a discussion forum is supposed to be like. Keep up the good work!
