Copper Head Gasket Trouble

What is the proper procedure for installing a copper head gasket? I was told that I may need to heat the gasket with a torch before installing to get it hot so that the copper will become soft and will seal well. Also I think copper coat spray will be helpful too. I need help on this one. Thanks

A copper headgasket is destined to leak unless The block or head has been O ringed or the gasket has some kind of fire ring. Your best bet for getting it to seal is to coat it with hylomar or yammabond or equivilant. If you're running a 4.375 or smaller bore a stock farmall 450 gasket is very hard to improve on.

I am running a 4.375 bore. The head nor block has been o-ringed. I was told that under 200 psi compression did not need o-rings with a copper gasket. I think that is false info. I also have a 450 head gasket that I will try. Thanks

It'll work Kenny, my bore size is smaller than 4.375 but the old counter bore for the factory sleeve is still there and it's 4.375. Just make sure you get the Case/IH all metal gasket and do a light coat of coppercoat on it. I also went with a set of ARP studs and nuts. They had the sizes I needed in stock and they're a big improvement over the originals.

Your using the stock 450 head gasket,on a 4.375 bore. Gasket measures about 4.26 on the rounds, this leaves part of the gasket in the bore.
Flogger, pistons must not come up to deck height, did you machine the outside of piston to give clearance around the head gasket, have you been running this way for a long period of time ?
Would you recommend filing the counter bore, where the sleeve use to be ! I believe, but I'm amazed looking at what i'm seeing with the sleeves pulled out and the 450 head gasket laying on top of the block !

Hey Clarence,
There's a small amout of overhang with a 4.375 bore, but after 1 season mine hasn't given any problems. Having tried and retried the copper headgasket deal, I decided to give the 450 stock gasket a try after reading a post about it here on YT by FARMALL. Haven't seen much of FARMALL on here lately but he knows what he's talking about.

Is this a new gasket or one that was installed before? If it is new Spray it with Copper Coat and let dry overnite and install.I"ve heard that you can reuse them by heating them(annealing)and letting it cool, coat them and install.

It is a new gasket. I did use copper coat, but it is leaking on the no. 1 cylinder. Now that you mention it, I recall that the heating procedure was for used copper gaskets. Thanks

You may have had a fingerprint in the coppercoat sealer on the gasket, Ive sprayed all surfaces, block deck, both sides of the gasket, and the head deck, let it dry and become real tacky, (bout 1-1/2hr) then assemble. Dont skimp on the cleaning, it has to be dry and clean before the sealer is sprayed on, old sealers around the head studs, or overspray on the head studs can scrape down the studs and lodge in between the sealing surfaces. Main thing is to have the block deck, and the head surface perfectly flat and matched. If that is done you can seal it with no o rings. if it has not been done,, youll fight it. the 450 head gasket is larger than the M head gaskets in the bore of the fire ring, It can seal a 4-3/8 bore, but will overhang the cyl, not much but only catches half the fire ring for a good seal. After about 50 times of self learning this procedure, I fianlly got em to seal the first time. Take the extra time and have a set of flange rings made to fill up the sleeve flange left over, then you can use the 450 head gasket to a better advantage VS on one that dont. Fingerprints, Uneven block surface, head surface, will fail a copper head gasket everytime! Overtorque on the studs dont help much, just overstresses the block deck, and pushes the warped area more and more,, ChadS

We have been running one on a modified 350 block in an H. We cut our own and installed it and it leaked at the back of #4, with ARP fasteners and 105 lbs of torque. Turns out no amount of copper coat would work. Tore it down and had the top of block re surfaced and the head also resurfaced and that was the problem. New copper coat and it has not leaked since. we have taken head off 4 times and have reused the same gasket, no heating with a torch, no O rings, it has worked every time
