H fouls plugs

Hello all, looking to see if anyone can give me some help. We built a Farmall H in 91 for pulling. It was bored to 3.75 and is stock stroke. The head, manifold, and carb are from a 300 and it has a regular IH distributor with regular old 12 volt coil. Head and block were both shaved. Nothing special but it lets us have fun or at least it used to. When this tractor sits for five minutes or more at an idle it will foul the plugs out. In order for it to run under load without cutting out or missing the fuel screw on the carb is backed out five to six turns. When it sits and runs like this at idle it will push black unburnt fuel out the pipe and doesnt sound like it is running right. Anything longer than about five minutes of idling and it will foul plugs. I have tried to back off the screw to where the tractor will run properly at idle but as soon as you pull the throttle it will cut out and shut off. I have tried using different brand and heat ranges of plugs and even opening the gap to almost .040 but the results are not really any better. Any ideas on what we can do to it to make it work right. We like to take this tractor to shows and parades and at least one or two pulls a year. But with the current situation we just can't do that without worrying about it loading up and foulin plugs. Any help would be wonderful. I would hate to rip out the motor and retire it back to the farm.

Thanks,
Casered

Sure sounds like you have a mid-range circuit in the carburetor that is stopped up...!! See if you can borrow another good carb to see if that is it...I bet it is..OR..a leak in the intake manifold gasket..maybe a crack in the intake manifold..?? Let us know..! Ron.

Thanks for the ideas. I dont know why I never thought about the carb needing cleaned out. I would bet that is what it is as it did get run last year and I lost off the paper filter that was over the carb. I used it this year and neglected to put one back on it. We have an H that we use around the farm with a 300 carb on it, so I will try taking that off in the next couple of weeks and give it a whirl. Thanks again.

Is it fouling out all four plugs?
Are they for sure gas fouled, or oil fouled?

No it doesnt foul out all of them at once. Yes it is definitley fuel and not oil. Whenever I tried backing off the fuel it would sit and run a long time without any fouled plugs. As soon as you crank the fuel screw back out it starts again. She dont use but a drop of oil. The tractor probably dont have 40 hours total run time on the motor since it was built. This has been an ongoing saga of plug fouling since day one, but it was never this bad before. Thanks

Which carb? the small carb, or big carb? The small carbs have trouble with the idle circuits not being large enough to handle the increased engine displacements. Either carb,, if the idle circuit is plugged, or not large enough, the fuel is pulled from the main jet instead of the idle circuit, that explains the erratic main jet adjustments to get it to run. If it still does this after rebuilding the carb, As explained before, vacuum leak. Possibly, if someone has built this carb for you,,,, maybe it was messed up in some way,, so have a close look at all the jet openings for over bored circuits. ChadS
