I have limited mechanical skills and limited resources but I can borrow what I need and have friends to help. I want to build a 3500lbs tractor to run COATPA(.com)/OSATPA rules. I would like to start in Div. II and maybe move up to III or IV. I don't want to change machines when I change classes down the road. I have read all of the suggestions for makes and models and they are kinda vague. My question is... What make and model of small tractor is easy to obtain? Easy to soup up? and easy to work on? I am leaning toward a AC WC. I have access to a case vac. Meeting new people, trveling to new places and learning new things are most important for now. We will try to win later. Thanks in advance to all who post. Feel free to email also.

My brother-in-law has a 615 combine motor that will bolt in a super C. Complete motor in excelent shape. You can here it run. Book says its stock @ 84 hp. We live in NE Ind. $450. would probably buy it. It would be a cheap way to get started. E-mail for more info if interested.

A farmall H, Super H, 300 or 350 can be a very competitive tractor in these classes.

They be made to run in the 3250 class. 3500 requires pressed center rims on the rear. They usually are at or near the top of the class in 3500/3750/4000/4500#. The rules you cited do not allow you to run an Oliver 77 (below 4000), other wise I would recommend it as another possibility.

Bang for the buck you cant beat the AC WC or WD.
The CASE VAC is to small.

Year model...handbrakes on WC. Slightly lighter. Both are great tractors. WD can go to higher weight class easier. All can have D-17 engine dropped in without problems.

I would say the easiest would be a farmall c or i dont know but i think a JD B could be brought down to this class.

What would have to be done to these tractors to be competitive?

I would say that a super C is the way to go. I live in central Pa and there is a guy that pulls in our circuit that uses his super c all the way up to 7500lbs. The thing really works. You need to find a combine motor (not sure on the specs) and stroke and bore it to create this wicked little tractor.
