If I put one of those above the hood air filters on my 88 Diesel and left the oil bath dry would I get any gain in horsepower and would it be enough filtration to protect the engine? Who could I get one of those filters from? Thanks in advance!!!!! !

Pickup a copy of any hotrod car magazine and look for a SUMMIT ad. Summit has a variety of K&N air filters for about the best price you will find. Good luck.

K&N Filters can be ordered at most autoparts stores. They can get the odd sizes and custom filters through special order. Try Autozone...

sorry I'm biased towards the zone...

K&N is the ONLY brand to use, low restriction and good filtration. 2 cents has a good point about the "fresh from the barnyard look", but for all out hp throw the oil bath away and experiment with intake pipe diameters larger than stock. I've found that removing the oil bath is good for about 4 hp, going from a 2" to 3" is worth 1-2 hp more. Good luck.

Dale, when I had my Ford on the dyno I tried disconnecting the ole oilbath and saw a 3-4 HP gain. I found a K&N filter that fit nicely on the end of the intake tube, and it nestles nicely up in behind the oilbath so it looks like the old oilbath is still in use for that fresh out of the barnyard look. And you know that the K&N is doing a better filtering job to boot!

You would probably have plenty of filtration for just pulling, however, air still has to draw through the steel wool type material in the air cleaner, so I don't think you will see any increase in power.

The mesh is likely plugged with dried mud/oil from 1/4 to 3/4 of the way up. Pull the mesh & replace with an internal or external filter. The factory mesh if re-used will at least be better after being boiled out.
