I am needing to add a front weight bracket that will extend 30 inches from the front and can purchase a 1/2"x4"x20'piece of alum. cheaper than a 1/2"x3"x20' steel. I will hang 250 to 300 lbs on it. will the alum hold? thanks

The aluminum your using will be fine. When I built my G I built the whole frame out of aluminum, the draw bar structure, nose bar, weight brackets, and wheelie bars. I have no problems with any of my stuff. I have evened pulled my G up 10,500 so that is 6,000 pounds on the tractor and no problems.

Here's the facts, you decide what you want to do...

Steel is .283333 pounds per cubic inch
Aluminum is 1/3 that -- .0944
Stength properties are roughly 1/3 as well

To calculate strength, you need the sectional inertia -- 1/12 base * height^3
Strength of steel = 30
Strength of Alum = 10

Assuming that you need (2) 30" pieces and then assume you will use another 30" in cross bracing.

90" of Aluminum would weigh 17 pounds
90" of Steel would weigh 38 pounds

The Steel bracket would be 27% stronger than the aluminum.

Sorry for the long post, I am an Injuneer.

I would double it up for starters. The alloy makes a difference. Chances are it"s 6061 stock and that has a higher ductility than something like 7075. It will probably do a nice job of supporting that weight in a static mode but if you are doing any bouncing 300# becomes a lot more load.

It could be that its hard for him to get in the lightest class that he pulls in. I put all the aluminum I could on my tractor.

We run about the same amount on the front with alu. Use the 1/2 x 4 and a good support system and you should not have any problems.
