What tractor is best to pull 3500 and 4500 classes. Have to run 1st gear only and can't have a tire bigger than 13.6-38 because that is the biggest tire size allowed in 3500 but want to run both classes competitively.

It's tough to beat an Allis in the 3500# class. I run 2 WD's and one with 14.9 - 38's and Its always top three usually only beat by other Allis Chalmers.

Ford's in this area. I prefer a old Case C or CC. 3500# is no problem.

An Oliver 66 or 77 would both work well in the 3500 - 4500 pound classes. Some places will not allow the 77 in the 3500 pound class. The 66 will need a set of 3 3/4" pistons and sleeves for the 4500 pound class on tight tracks.

Look at a Minneapolis Moline 335. The interchangeable parts on an MM can make this tractor a monster in these classes and very easy to build. U302 3.75 blocks and a 5" crank from larger models bolts right on making 165 cubes to 220 easily. Bored? You can get 236. This is no stroking. A stock 220 power unit ran 66 horsepower. Good luck. Look at maybe a MM R too. Less power but still can be modified easily.

Fact of the matter is, with a little luck, skill and some work, you can make darn near anything work in 3500. Since you are limited to 1st gear, the AC would have a slight disadvantage becasue they came with overgrown bicycle tires and you can put 13.6-38"s on them (makes them go a lot faster).

Personally, a 1st gear rule is one of the silliest rules I have ever seen. It just allows the people who "bend" the rules to do things like swap out gears so thier hopped up tractor can go faster. If you are gonna pull these rules and want a B, stay away from the ones with the 6 speed tranny, as it goes a little faster than the race at the retirement home.

We clean up @3500 &4000 w/ a totally stock 37 Allis-Chalmers WC. 4500 is a little tough though. With a WD-45 Crank & some other tweaks the WC can be very competitive at these weights.
