Chad S or any one else, I recently put a pertronix ignition and accel coil on my stock puller. Any good timing numbers for this setup? i had to retime it after the module but i only did it by ear. I also have drilled out my carb so i can get the fuel and air to her just need some spark!!! I have a light but dont know much about the marks. Any other upgrades for a stock 37/8 bore engine would be great

Nothing wrong with tuning them by ear. If you know your tractor well enough, you know how it sounds. Most stockers that come in the shop here, are set on the dyno, postion marked on the housing to note where it is located. Thing about that is,, the timing to get full power on the dyno, makes the engine sound labored, or under a slight load at idle, so I back the timing off, to smooth it out for just driving it around, etc etc. The small 248' ci, do like the timing to make them labor a bit ideling,, But in your case, time it by ear, stock setings are ok in this case, usually sound better by ear, than the book specs anyways. Numbers is around 28 degrees adv. but it will be laboring at an idle. Not much, but too much for my taste. The petronix, will help fire your fuel, eliminating the condensor from the points, gives it more fire to the plugs, the conversion kits, enable the coil, to run the full out put potential, since there is no points contacts to burn up, you can get away with it. In some cases, a really hot coil, will burn up the petronix unit, too much of a load or something, but burns them up over a short time, If you have the small Accel coil, you wont have much trouble with that. It will have a hotter spark, just due to the conversion. Good thing to have for a bullet proof ignition system. Use a good set of wires, keep the cap clean, should have a good system. You can open up the plug gaps now, some say up to .050, Id go around .040 to start with. Did you check the mechanical advance mechanism out when you installed the conversion kit? it is the weights unde the ponts plate. If you seen the 2 springs, and still the stock ones, you can replace them with a set from a Chevrolet V8 distributor, They are lighter, and will give you a faster timing reaction, therefore, increasing throttle responce time. Bout it for ignition upgrades. ChadS
