It's easy to add more fuel to any diesel. The tough part is getting the extra airflow to support combustion. When adding LP or natural gas vapor into a naturally aspirated diesel. That fuel is taking up room in the intake manifold that used to carry air. So now you have added more fuel and less air to the engine. No wonder it won't make more HP. Adding vapor fuel to a turbo diesel can make extra HP if the turbo is sized to handle the extra exhaust flow and compressor side load. Stationary power applications run LP or natural gas in the diesel to cut fuel costs and reduce stack emissions. A “vapor" carburetor or mixer is added to the diesel intake. The diesel injection system is used to ignite the vapor fuel. A wee shot of diesel is injected just prior to TDC and woof, no need for spark plugs. Full power is still possible from the LP/natural gas "diesel" when the vapor is shut off and full diesel injection is used. If you want easy and cheap HP for a little while. Start turning the diesel pump up. LP injection was used on some diesel field tractors to save fuel costs. Looses some HP however. Injecting liquied LP throuh an "injector" at and spraying directly onto the back of the intake valve. May make more HP on a naturally aspirated engine.

Glen, I know that in the right conditions that LP injected in a naturally aspirated diesel farm tractor can "wake them up". I always theorized that this was not due so much to the added BTU's of the fuel but rather the latent heat effect of the refrigerant characteristics of the LP going through an orifice, cooling the intake air and functioning as a "poor man's" intercooler. Gman, Ive seen 730's with propane injection, water injection, and some other kind of fuel...actually I think the tractor was running on about 4 different types of things at the same time. Needless to say it didnt work worth a flip. I ran propane on the R for a while....I took it off pretty quick, sounded like detonation pretty bad and at the lower rpm's I think I lost hp. Ive still got all the setup, tank, valve etc. Probably never use it.

A typical diesel will only burn about 70% of the fuel but propane will create a more efficent burn about 98%. The reason for this is the propane is a catalyst. For the most power gain out of propane injection you should retard your engine back a few degrees because it will advance your timing. I had a farmall 400 diesel and made a homemade propane setup it ran pretty good with the right timing. Then I installed a little turbo and ran about 14 psi of boost with this and propane, I blew the stock head gasket but it ran like a 1956 tractor never should!
