880 Crankshaft Dowel pins, do I need them?

Putting together a small Oliver engine that will turn no more than 2500 RPM on occasion, just over 400 cubes and should make around 95 - 100 horse I suppose.

My question is do I need the dowels on the end of the crankshaft? The crank is drilled for them... I guess I could order them from AGCO if nessesary. Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

What size do you need?
I probably have them.

Torquenut,

Dowel pins on flywheels are needed for two reasons:
1) to center the flywheel to the crankshaft, i.e. without them, it's possible to get the flywheel off to cause an imbalance.
2) act as a positive lock to help carry the shear stress from the load transfer between crank and flywheel. The job of the capscrews is to maintain clamp load to the crank.

I would not run without them and have a couple extra new dowel pins if you can't find any. Running without dowel pins is a good way to turning your flywheel into a buzz saw. Also, I always use Loctite on flywheel capscrews.

If it is drilled for them, I would use them... They are prescision-drilled for a good fit, and will keep the flywheel from working the bolts, and loosening up...

If you have a Tool and Die shop close, they will have lots of them. They are used in stamping dies.
