Has anyone put their tractor on a dyno with the alternator hooked up and then checked it with it unhooked and no other changes? Is there a noticable change in power? I would think a battery in good state of charge would not load the alternator too hard, but have not tried to check it myself.

2 HP greater on dyno @ 540 PTO speed with no alt. This is with a disconnect switch which I turn the alt off right before I start the sled.

Here's what I've witnessed happen, Different loads will affect the alt. and vary what it takes to drive it and how many amps its capable of, I have been around a few that ran no alt. (over time the 12 volt batt. and trickle charger isn't enough, plus if there lucky they got 12.6 volts going to the ignition. with a ALT. you would have 14+ Volts may not sound like much difference but it is)and had some issues some seem to run fine,I have put alt. back on them and they ran better having a charging system, Now you can get around this with on of the 16volt batt. with 14 volt tap on it you have to buy a specific charger, these are expensive but seem to work good, I would just run an ALt. its simple and keeps the batt.up and makes sure the electrical system can operate efficiently.

I am not trying to be a smart ???, but if the alternator is the difference of having enough power to compete , you probably should leave it at home. but it does take 2 hp

If you think it'll make a difference you could wire up a disconnect switch & get those ponies back.

Exactly how would you wire a disconnect switch? Prolly a dumb question but I might be interested. Our club pulls 60hp and under, and 60hp and over, I"m going to be very close to the 60hp mark, so 2hp would make a difference in my case.
