SCHWEEEEE ET!

Interesting domes...YOUR design? Or...do I detect both a dome and a CRATER? (might just be a reflection, the crater part)

Balanced reciprocating assembly?...or is that not necessary in this rpm range? [still tryin' to learn the science of puller engines, so just bear with me here...]

Balancing is ALWAYS a good idea, reguardless of the rpm range.

Hey Chad could you by any chance post a close up of the top of your piston. I would like to see the finishing. Did you happen to see the post last week by Gordo on his new pistons on the IH board. Everybody told him they were junk and send them back I think alot of those opionions did not know anything and was looking for your advise. JON

Mag, I seen that post last week, I did not say anything either to step on any toes. On these pistons, its just left over casting from the molds, the picture I seen, in the IH board, looked as if it was cracked along the dome of the piston. If I wanted to get rid of the rough castings on these pistons, I would use a belt sander just on the dome to smooth it out. They mite trap a bit of carbon on the tops of the pistons, which over time, will build up, and smack the head, but thats alot of build up now!!! have to be a 3 quart a day oil burner to be that bad. Chad

Aren't sharp edges anywhere in the combustion chamber a potential hot-spot and possible cause of preignition and detonation? I'd definitely get rid of that extra casting flash.

Sharp edges are also cracks waiting to happen, even on aluminum, along with the hot spots. I would have to see one of the pistons close up, to judge it, so I will try to keep quite.

Yep, a sharp edge creates a stress riser and the potential for a crack to start there. You can't see much from the picture except for a little casting flash, but sharp edges are never a good idea in a combustion chamber.

I had a closer look since you all brought it up. I took a file, and filed down all around the domes, no evidence of cracks, smooth surface underneath. The area along the side of the dome where the casting flash is more evident (in the center of the piston, between the dome tower, filed it smooth. I was looking for pits underneath the casting flash itself, where air may have got under the material, or? but saw nothing of any sign of a crack. The piston heads of these pistons are over 1/2inch thick from the very top, to where it will go through the piston, (break through from too much taken off) These pistons did not have no where near that much taken off material wise. I did get the short block and the front end back on the 450 and all tightened up, and turning over with the starter, Head is on its way this afternoon! Just installing the ignition/hyd pump, governor (M&W) and cleaning up tools as I go along. I got another Super M in yesterday to build up, Ill show a smoother version of the pistons Im making without the flash, its going to be bigger than this 450, Cubic Inch wise. More stroke,,, ChadS

I'm no pro engine builder, but you should be good to go. I'm sure there are no cracks there. Areas like that are just a good spot for a crack to develop over time, particularly as that little raised area would likely run much hotter than the rest of the piston, possibly leading to the preignition problem I mentioned. Why kind of CR are you looking at there?
