Would a John Deere 4020 powershift transmission work well in a pulling tractor?

I guess I should have stated before I run out of field classes , 10-12,000lb with the 4020 , 12-16,000 with the 4430 . Some are dyno checked stock rpm and others are 3000rpm limit , and they check , must have stock engine , pump , pto , hydraulics 3pt etc . In our classes we do pretty good , probably the best of the Deeres over the years but it is hard to beat the good running 66 Farmalls that have been tuned up .

they will take power, but their is really no benefit to run it in a pulling tractor unless it is out of the field.
add power and the PS does nothing as far as benefits go.

Don't know what kind of HP you are thinking but I have been pulling a 1964 Powershift since 1984 . I have done some pump work etc and it will run 225hp . The trans must be in good shape and the system pressure set 10-15psi over the hi spec to keep everything from slipping . Also the torsional dampner must be in good shape . Mine slipped because of a rear main leak back then and I put a new one in , resurfaced the flywheel , new springs and a washer behind each spring . Slipped only once since . Set the shift valve to shift as fast as possible . One thing I will say , " DO NOT SHIFT " while pulling , find a gear you want to end up in and leave it there . In the 3000rpm 10-12,000 classes I run 4th gear , 18.4RX38 , if the track seems easy I will turn the power down a little for the 10,000 class . Also run a 4430 Powershift , run 5th 14,000 and down , over 15,000 use 4th gear . Bought it new , 6900hrs ago , shimmed up the dampner on that too , nothing else has been done to the engine or powertrain except pump , injector and turbo fine tunning .

I've seen some 8-speed Powershift Deeres pull, and they work just fine. If the transmission is in good shape and properly maintained, and the operating pressure is up to specs, those trannies are all but bulletproof.
