I heard once that the International W30 rear ends are used in tractor pulling with high horsepower engines pluged into them is this true? I was told that they plug 1600 horsepower Packard airplane engines into them and they can take the high horsepower and high rpm is this true? Thanks.

I was told that a F-30 will hold two built big block chevys no problem. And a F-20 will hold one built big block.

F-30 and W-30 rear ends/final drives are two completely different animals. The F-30 uses a high clearance design needed for row crop farming, the standard tread W-30 design is an updated copy of the 10-20 rear end.

F-30 rears ends are fairly strong. I'm wonder about the W-30. It uses a seperate transmission case that bolts in to the cast bathtub style rear axle housing, with the attachment being at the perimeter flange of the case. Thrust generated by the pressure of the bull pinion bevel gear is compensated for by the use of an adjustable thrust stop on the side of the bath tub frame that rests against the side of the transmision case. I don't think it will stand much more of a power increase before movement/breakage occurs.

30+ years many Massey Harris 55 tractors were gutted for their strong transmission/final drive assemblies for use in pulling tractors. And I believe they were pretty much bullet proof with high horsepower engines like the Allison. I saw several back then. I think that is the major reason why complete original Massey Harris 55s are not common today.

Dick,I know a puller in Eastern Kansas that pulled a 7000 and 9000 lb Allison V-12 modified tractor using 55 Massey rear ends and he went thru (9) of them before he quit in the 1980's.

I have never seen anyone use a W-30 rearend for pulling but have seen plenty of F-30 rearends used.I have seen them handle twin blown Chevs and even a V-12 Allison.

In the club that I pulled in we had a allison with a Massey 55 rearend and one with a F-30 rearend. The Massey never had a problem. The F-30 rear broke at least 3 times in the 5 years that I pulled with them. The JohnDeere skidder rearends were the strongest that I saw.

Yes I imagine that the F30 rearends are not as strong as the others. Thanks for the reply.
