will a 720 gas run with LP pistons with regular gas without meltdown?

It should run fine on good 91-octane pump gas if everything else is stock. 720 LPs had a CR of just under 8:1 from the factory, which just about any pump gas will handle. Obviously a two-cylinder has a big bore and there's a long distance for the flame-front to travel across the cylinder, but I still don't foresee any problems. A guy might have to pull the timing back a couple degrees, but I would think that would be the worst-case scenario. Or mixing in a little 110 LL av-gas with the pump gas would certainly prevent any problems. My two cents.

I wonder what a 720/730 with LP pistons, a Roberts Cam, cleaned up cylinder head ports and a dry air filter would make? It would take a well built G to make the same HP.

I don't know. It's interesting that even with 6.14:1 compression, the factory 720 gas made a hair more horsepower than the 720 LP at 7.94:1 compression. You'd think a gasoline-burner with LP pistons and the work you mentioned would be good for 70 hp pretty easy, wouldn't it?

G/MAN, I know when Deere was testing implements for the upcoming New Generation tractors they needed a tractor with 80 h.p. or so and they used a souped up 720 tractor and had to use airplane fuel for it. I have often wondered if they used the LP pistons in it or did other work. It had to have been a very high comression engine. Perhaps they made some custom pistons for it. It would be interesting to find out for sure. Mike

Sounds like a pretty stout tractor. Anything done to it? 2nd to 3rd is a pretty big jump. 2.25 mph to 3.5.
