Engine idling too high on JD A

I'm still trying to adjust the governor on my 35 JD A. I'm wondering if the problem is with the governor weights. The tractor is in the slow idle position and whenever I barely bump and I mean barely touching the throttle, it revs up way to high but the linkage rod has barely moved. I do notice that the motor sounds like it's going to die whenever I'm pulling though, and then it might pick back up a little halfway down track. Also, I did reenforce the spring by placing 2 of them together but haven't pulled since I've done this. Any helpful suggestions?

Engine idling too high on JD A-govornor problem in reply to 1951G, 04-04-2005 07:57:33
tear apart the governor(not jed bush)haha. Had a 51 A do that and under a load, it would amost die. the govorner weights wouldn't work when under a load, the shaft wore down and wore a groove in the brass slide deal that opperates the govorner. put a couple washers under it and fixed everything, and it works fine now. I'd bet its in the governor if i had money to bet with..HAHA...

When adjusting the linkage from the carb to the governor, the throttle should be in the wide open position and the rod should be 1/2 of the hole short of going into the throttle shaft when the throttle shaft is wide open. You can find the procedure in the IT shop manual.

I have a 38 G with the same problem, On mine the weights are slipping out of the slots and that is making it over reving, Will be tearing into the govenor to see what the issue is, The snap ring could have popped out?

Sounds like you need to adjust the governor to carb linkage so it is longer. Are you sure that you haven"t defeated the governor action by putting the double springs on it?

I don't think so, since it was doing this before I put the 2 springs together.
