Looks like I may have to replace the head on my 88. I want to get the most bolt on power for this engine. It has 3.75 bore flat top pistons. Would a 1650 head work? Any ideas appreciated.

If you are staying with 265 cubes, then a 1600 series head is the best option. Just bolting on this head will bump the compression ratio a couple points. However, any power gain will be minimal unless airflow is increased with porting and larger valves. The 1600 series heads have the same valve size as the Super 88, only difference is 20% smaller chamber.

If you are going up in displacement, the best head to bolt to a 4 main block is the 1100 Massey or small chamber GK195U head. A stock 1100 head will flow nearly twice a stock 88 head. The best I"ve done on an 88 head is to get 40% more flow than stock, using a 3 7/8 bore fire ring in the head gasket. I have a couple of GK195U heads if you"re interested.

I noticed the valves were bigger on the head that came off this tractor. I cleaned one up and low and behold it had an IH part number on it. 404179R1 which is for a 560! Was this something common or just barnyard engineering?
