Chads, been doing some searching and reading here at YT and came across one of your posts and you said that you recently found out that one could get an 3 9/16" overbore kit for a H-SH. To refresh your memory, here is what you posted.

"That"s what I thought too, till bout 3 weeks ago! They make a thin, and I mean, thin wall sleeve that took the H-SH out to 3-9/16 offered as an overbore kit, for the super H. It used to be, that the biggest overbore for the Super H was 3.5 bore. I ran across this bigger kit while looking through my catalog. Email me, and I ll show you where I found it. I would like to get one of these kits for an H me and my dad are rebuilding. Up here in Canada we get our engine kits from A&I products. Will the kit you mentioned fit in the stock bore of our H block? From what I understand, the stepped head pistons create more compression compared to the Firecraters. Is this correct? My uncle ordered an overbore kit for his "40 H and thought that he had ordered the kit with stepped head pistons but the kit arrived with Firecraters. Being new to this, it gets a little confusing when looking through the A&I catalog. If you could take a look at this link and see if this is what you mean, I"d appreciate it.

Sid, Yes, an H block can run 3-9/16 bore pistons, just have no sleeves in the block, The Super H, had the same sleeve set as the 300-350, but still available in 3-9/16 for the C-169, and has an overbore kit of 3-5/8 C-175. I had to double check the block specs of both block styles, and the specs in the book. You can put the big sleeves right into the Super H-350 blocks, or, if you have a Super H block, bore the sleeve to 3-5/8. H blocks, the block bore is 3-9/16, you can use the same Super H piston kit, and use the pistons only, and drop them in the block, or,, have the block bored to fit the big sleeves. Firecraters are all you will find for engines 169-175, unless you have flat tops, or M&W's. The H pistons can still be gotten in stepped head designs, but ony small bore size. The economy route is to pull the sleeves, install the pistons, and use a C-175 head gasket, and you get 169 cubes. Which, wakes up an H pretty good. The best route is to bore the H block to fit the big sleeves, Hope this helps,, ChadS

I'm getting more confused. In the post I quoted you in the original question you said "They make a thin, and I mean, thin wall sleeve that took the H-SH out to 3-9/16 offered as an overbore kit, for the super H." If I understand you correctly, that means that one can get an overbore kit that will give you a 3 9/16 bore with the sleeves installed in an H block. Did I misunderstand what you said? I don't know what the bore size is when measured without the sleeves in an H block. I'm getting confused because you said that you could put really thin sleeves in an H block and get 3 9/16 bore but then you reply saying that in order to get 3 9/16 I would have run sleevless. Just trying to get this stuff straight.

This engine is the original and is just going to be rebuilt. I have a 300U engine that I am going to bore and stroke for next season. I want to rebuild this H engine and go as big as I can and run with sleeves. Then next spring I plan on pulling this motor and setting it aside so if we want to put it back to original, we can.

OK, That post you read, is one I made a mistake on. I was looking through the parts book, and found, what they advertized as an overbore for the H-SH. Well, turns out, the listing was misinformed. For a fact, the biggest you can go, and still run sleeves is 3.5 in an H block. Which is the bore of a SH, you bore the H sleeve to 3.5 and makes the thin sleeve. Super H, has the new sleeve sizes in them, like the 300-350 blocks, but, starts at 3-9/16 for overbore options. So no,, the H cant be 3-9/16 with sleeves, it can without sleeves. It would be just like running a small chevy or Ford, and run on the block walls. Now, you have a 300 block,,, thats the one you can get creative with,, you can either go with 3-5/8 stock stroke,,, with sleeves, or back up, and run 3-9/16 with a stroker, more 3-9/16 bore pistons work better for compression height to accomidate a stroker crank. Just use IH 706 gas pistons (C263) 3.5 bore is as big as an H can go, with sleeves, boring the sleeves is required. I apologize for the error, hope this sets it straight. Chad

Thanks for the clarafication. No need to apologize. People that never make a mistake, don't do anything. Going to finish up painting the gravity box we rebuilt today and maybe the H will make it into the shop. Thanks for the info Chads! Once I get the H apart I will most likely have more questions for ya.
