I got my 460 all back together today!!!! Havent fired it up yet, but has 200psi of compression, before it was 155. New head, ported,polished, milled .100, new rings, bearings, Hope it runs good this time round! big carb, really big carb this time round,,,,, rev r up, turn it loose! ChadS

Hey Chad, I ran into a problem with my Farmall 560. I bored it out to a 301, but when i go to fire it off, it will only run with the choke on, and smoke like crazy. When I turn the choke off, it dies. I have all the original 560 parts, carb, etc. Does this sound as if I need a bigger carb to let more air in? Thanks!!

Just bigger main jet, make sure the carb is clean in the idle circuits, find a #33, or #35 venturi. make sure the needle valve is working, and not obstructed in the carb. The carb I built for my 460, is off a 715 combine with a 301, rejetted to run higher rpms, #35 venturi. Starts without the choke even cold, no slobbering through out the rpms,, good throttle responce. also check igntion timing, points if you have them,, Id say 4 jets sizes or drill bit sizes from the stock jet,,, as a starting point using the 560 carb bowl. Lots more air flowing in the manifold. Also doulbe check all your bolt torques on the head, and manifold. Hope this helps! Chad

I keep seeing you refer to comp. in psi,why? What is the mechanical comp. ratio,true mathematical ratio, not an estimate.Your psi method leaves such a huge area for variables it is a useless measurement.Or... could it be you can't figure the true comp. ratio?

Good question. Psi is what that particular engine produces in compression. I guess it makes it more simple. I wouldnt say that is a useless variable,, the mathematical figure are harder to figure, just due to there not being a true scale to compare actual pressure, to the math scale. No, Im not a mathmatician, but, I can tell most people, how many HP to closly expect from the compression pressure, and the cubic inch, from actual numbers. I belive that 5 to 1, is 100 psi. 10 to 1 is 200 psi, 15 to 1 is 300 psi. That is the scale I go by, wrong or not,, its as close as I can relate,, from reading countless repair books, on gas and diesil engines, from the specs, that the manufacturer gives us to list in the books. many can disagree on that scale, they may have different books than I do that reads different spec listings. With varibles such as cam timing,duration,overlap,and ring leak rate to piston speed IE your cranking RPM, you still think it's accurate?So how do you go about determining compresion distance on your pistons,rod length, and desired gasket thickness, etc BEFORE you build an engine or do you have to trail and error assymble one till you get your desired compression pressure?

Id have to say by trial and error. Done different things to build compression. What we have done here is how far we are in the story. From what ive seen, and 98% farmall,s it takes a high dome piston, the taller the better. Cant ever get what I want in other piston designs, so I build them myself. Somethings are done, just as I know they will work from others different varaibles that did not work before they built it. I fill in the gaps, if it wasnt enough, I added more stroke. I then started adding parts, like bigger carbs, cams from later production years, listening to all the pullers complain that the carb shop got it wrong,,,, cyl heads, history on what changes IH made to make better engines out of them,, etc etc,, I can go on and on,,, trial and error, looking at worked, and what didnt work,, always looking for changes, I cant cut my own cams to play with cam grinds to know whats perfect. trial and error does that,,,, I build, with what is in front of me,, sometimes,, its not the most tricked out scientific tractor pulling, 25,000$+ engine, it mite be just the neighbors old M,,, but itll run good when it leaves,,,, if it aint got it,, how you gonna get it? spend $$$ and guess,,, or trial and error???
