Chad finally got to put my H on dyno last Sunday.I had called and got gov spring,I had rebuilt and rejetted carb, ported intake and exhaust. I also switch to 12 volt with alt. electronic ign. and recurved dist.I had 42 hp last summer after all this strong 44 bounces off 46 at times. Now I have some leaking around head gasket, but not real bad. I've never had valve cover off or head. What type of head gasket should I use when replacing? I farm full time so it will be afew days before I even get to look at it. Just wondered what I might need to have on hand. Thanks Andy

Leaking out the sides, or in the cyl? Id run a stock 350 head gasket, it has a larger fire ring around the bore. Dont put the gasket on dry, use some type of sealer, either copper coat spray, maybe even aluminum paint. Oil, compression, can blow a head gasket real quick when installed dry. Torque, and retorque the head gasket, after its warmed up. Sounds like a pretty stout H! Hope this helps,, ChadS

Chad, It was leaking out the sides. Thanks for the advice. I'll get a 350 gasket and some copper coat. I'll let you know what I find when I remove head. This tractor looks rough, bought it off my nephew. He bought it a couple of years ago to grind feed. We did know what we had till we dynoed it. Thanks Andy

Yep, diamonds in the rough. Dad and I found a SM burned up in a salvage yard few weeks back, got it running, and it was more than I ever expected from a scrapper! Im replacing a few gaskets,, due to fire leaks,,, but nothing serious,,, Usually, they leak right in the middle of the head, there is a small ring that seats over the oil passage in the block that supplies oil to the head, that little seal starts leaking, you may be starving the head for oil if its really bad,,, Copper head gaskets are famous for this type of leak in this area,, a dab of silicone around the area, holds for quite a while. yep,, 44-46 hp aint bad at all!!! Around here,, in our lite farm stock classes, that would be a competitive tractor! ChadS
