Help, PLEASE Two years ago I had my head milled and reinstalled. Last year I pulled it back apart and found that the gasket was leaking in-between the cylinders. I pulled the block and took both the head and block to a GOOD machine shop. Both where touched up to be flat. I put it back together only to have water dripping on right side at the plug area. This did not bother me, but last fall I had water get into one of the cylinders (white smoke on start up). I just pulled the head off and found the cylinders are still leaking in between the two. I have been using J.D. head gaskets with a spray on copper coat from Napa. I also installed grade 8 bolts and tourqed (spelling) them down to 180 ponds. I warmed it up to operating temp and retourqed when hot. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG The compression is 147 on both sides. A standard head gasket should hold this, but it is not.

THANKS FOR HELP BUDD

I must be the odd one out since I use the plain ole JD head gasket, with no problems. I had both the block and head milled to clean them up. Replaced all the studs with new ones and new lead washers under the nuts. Put the gasket on dry, no sprays or sealers. The JD gasket had some type of a tacky coating on it. So far no leaks at all. This is on a 47 A with a power-block and high comp pistons.

Bud, the gasket you are using.. does it only have metal on one side?? If it does, try a 60 gasket.. it will be metal/comp/metal... you can also try the Fel/Pro gaskets.. NAPA should have them... Good Luck

I would be willing to bet the problem is the gasket itself.I have found the ones from JD are not very good.I ordered a gasket from Triple G Service about 2 years ago ,and have had no trouble since.Thier number is 1-888-720-0830.

Budd, Ive got that rear plate here, Ill bring it to Mentone this weekend if your comming. Also, I have a copper gasket if you need it. Id try a can, or 2 of stop leak in the radiator if its a water leak, mite not be enough pressure to keep it in place and not holding the seal. If your not losing compression from the leak, try sealer. Chad

Chads;

Yes I am planning on Mentone wheather this thing is running or not. I have tried the stop leak, but will not work cause there is no water pump to move the water. I will bring the gasket to Mentone for you to look at. I may have a crack in the block as I see no place that water is coming from. I do see where is is not sealing good inbetween though. I am going to try a victors gasket this time and we will see how that does.

I run a '47 A with about 200 lbs of cylinder pressure. The only head gaskets that last are either Lubbocks copper or the gaskets from Victor. JD is supposed to use different manufactures for the A and the G. The G ones will last but experience tells me, the A ones will not.
