Drawbar height/angle?

On my Oliver 66 RC I'm considering making new brackets to drop and slide the drawbar in more.
The top of the drawbar would be 17" flat, then it could be adj. up to 19" or 20"- would having that angle be a disadvantage? I thought about just shortening it, but cannot figure out how to do it and still have it looking close to the same shape. Any info would be helpful- even to tell me if I'm wasting my time.

The optimal hook angle is approx. 30-35 degrees, measured at the attaching point on the sled. If you measure the length of the hook, you'll be all set to figure out what drawbar height you really want, using basic geometry formula relative to right triangles. It's hard to believe that 45 degrees isn't optimal, but when you do the physics stuff, you'll find it's less, with the main reason being that you still want to focus the bulk of your energy moving the sled forward, as opposed to lifting it w/ am abnormally high drawbar. By the way, don't tell anyone what you're up to, especially if it works for you!

Deere Puller- By hook angle, you mean the angle of the chain from sled to drawbar, right? I guess measuring the length of the hook added to the chain length will give the total length from sled to hitch ? What is the std chain length, if there is one?
With my drawbar, will having the "hinge" 2 inches or so lower than the clevis, at optimum chain angle hurt? I'm just getting started pulling and trying to learn all I can. Thanks

Don't know, many sleds are different, depending on their weight and skid setup. I remember once pulling on a sled that had a hook length of over 45" - By and large, the better the sled (weight & skid) the shorter the hook, as they have the oomph to stop even the most powerful of tractors. The light sleds typically have a long hook, in an effort to reduce the draft & cause 'spin-outs' as opposed to power outs.

i pull a 66 inthe 3500/4000 lb class.my draw bar is 19 from center,20 inches in hight.and my draw bar looks stock.there is two ways to do this.my dad took off the lower half of the draw bar, welded twoears on it(one on each side).he set the ears back about 6 or 8 inchesfrom where the lower half originally hooked to. he then shortened the up rights up.when it is all hooked up ,it puts about a 30 degree angle on your hitch. NOW,if you have a narrow front end,it will come up !i run about 150 lb on the front.the 2nd way is my secrete.if you need helpplease email me,i will see if i can get some pic"s to you.DAVE.
