Hi, I have 41' A John Deere with the two speed transmission instead of the straight 6. I have heard of people slowing them down by taking the 1st reduction gear from a later A and a couple of other parts to fix this. If anyone knows how to do this or can help me in any way I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Luke

The two cylinder Deere was built to lugg all day while sipping low grade fuel. Peak HP for fulling at high speed requires another type of engine with smaller cylinders and shorter/larger dia ports.

So I will be fine leaving it the way it is you think?? Just thought while I have it tore down I would slow it down if need be. If not I won't then! Thanks, Luke

how much horsepower are you hoping to make, what bore/stroke,what classes are you pulling in. If pretty much stock motor, YES slow it down! If big bore/stroke then maybe not. Are you pulling any speed classes or mph classes? This JD that whipped the 460 is making a lot of power!

My A will hopefully be cranking 80-90 HP. I have a powerblock w/aluminum pistons, a heisler head and manifold, cam w/lifters, and a late model gas carb.

you might get 55 horse with the changes you've made, but for 80-90 you arn't quite there yet. If it were me, I'd spend all the extra money that you are putting into an early A and purchase a 50-51 model A witht the Straight 6 speed. I guarantee you will have 1500 in alterations and Machine work to obtain 90 Horse. But when you are done, you can go faster and pull more consistantly, but you will have a tractor that is only a pulling tractor. Good Luck in whatever you do. Greg H.

I have seen Gang Green of NC. Beat 6 cyl Molines while running on 1 cyl and backfiring on the other. That is fact. I have seen him beat about everything in his class everytime and it is a 2 cyl. deere.. HA HA. I am not sure the spelling of his name and I am sure some one will know who I am talking about, but just ask Mr. Surles How bad that deere eats that Moline. It may take him twice as long to get down the track, but theres not a time limit.

Your right there, but face it, we can do more with our 2 cylinder than you can with 6. Seen many a 630 and 730 even G beat molines, also seen many a moline whoop a deere too

with that combo you will not have 80 hp you can change the first reduction gear to slow it down about a 1/3 of a gear. some have got away with only changing the first red gear but to avoid gear wine i would change clutch gear as well or whole clutch greg
