I thought maybe someone on here could tell me how to find these Jimmys. I had the thought of puting one in an older GM pickup to haul my pulling tractors. I figured a 4-53 would be a good truck fit. Grandpa has a 8-71 in his semi and used to have a 6-71. Great sounding engines! What can anyone tell me about finding some. Long live the two stroke!

I saw a Ford F-350 in Tennessee with an Isuzu 6 cyl diesel out of a bread truck. It had a 3 spd aux. tranny behind the 5 spd. Guy said 26 down the highway. Said it pulled a trailer great. I wouldn't worry about that horsepower number so much. The new IH 4300 CXT or whatever its called is something like 260 hp.

I don't know how suitable a 4-53 is going to be in a pickup. I know a guy that did it in a Ford 20 years ago and it was a dog. He added an auxillary transmission that helped, but then it was more like driving a Mack quadruplex. You're only looking at something like 160 hp with big injectors unless you go to a turbo setup. That's not much grunt for dragging a trailer around. Most Japanese 4 cylinder engines have more than that these days. The fuel economy won't be too great either if you set it up to run. I've got an old 8-71 in a rollback, and although it sounds good it only gets about 5 mpg. Of course a 4-53 in a pickup should do much better, but they do like their fuel when you tweak them.

Thanks for the info. I see they ,ade a 6V-53? Hmmmmm. Neat old engines. I knew a guy with a 3-71 in his 1970's F-250. He got 21 mpg. You'd have to get the gears right I guess.

20 yrs. ago I saw a 6000 Ford tractor diesel in a Ford pickup. He pulled his "A" Deere around the country. He said after he got the rear end ratio right it did a nice job. The engines were almost a copy to the 6cyl gas in the pickup.Earl

Hi Ethan: Why not just buy a truck with a big gas motor or diesal power. If you don't have the truck with the big power it will require beefing up the front end to handle the heavy motor.

Jerry is right. You put a big beefy diesel in a pickup truck you will be replacing wheel bearing and ball joints every 10 k miles. We just put a 5.9 lt Cummins in a '79 Ford. It runs a drives, but still working out the bugs. What I always wanted to do for a daily driver was put a little Deutz motor in a ford ranger. Now that would get some fuel mileage.

A friend of mine had a chevy with a deutz 5 cyl in it. Awesome mileage and power. He put a CAT 3208 in a Ford two but rebuilt the front end a few times. It would take some work, but ya know goofy stuff I think up is never the easy way. My power stroke will do the job for now. Maybe some GM power later. Duramax are still too expensive to buy used.
