720 gas

Even though I grew up in a two cylinder household,
a good friend of mine has ask me for help with a 460 with a 715 gas combine replacement engine. It is marked c 301.

I put it on a M&W dyno and it made 38hp @ 540rpm.
It starts good, idles smoothly, but has to be choked until it warms up. Then it surges a little when loaded.

I suggested to him that we 1)adjust the valves, 2)
check compression, 3)check point gap, dwell, and timing, 4) disassemble, clean, and adjust float
on carburetor, and 5) try to adjust govenor to 2450 rpm(it peaks@1850 right now) before we run it on the dyno again to adjust total advance, and
carb.

Are 715 combine gas engine tuning specs the same as 806 gas, or are they different? What thermostat and operating temp are best?

How much mechanical advance does an 806 gas have in the distributor? How much total advance should this engine have? Any carb tuning suggestions?

Thank you.

38hp? out of a 301? Something is wrong there! I got a C-263 thats over 80, and its only had a stock rebuild. Yes, run a compression check, Stock is somewhere in the area of 170-195psi on a good engine. They are picky on timing, they love 92+ octane gas, dont run it on anything less than 92, cause the will preignite and burn up the valves. Set the timing on the dyno, at 540, that is where you will get peak power. On the carb,, I hope it still has the 715 carb on it, thats the biggest carb available for that engine, it should have a #35 venturi in it, which is good for running 2500 rpms. After running it on the dyno, pull out the plugs,, see what they look like, if they are whitish, or lite in color, you need more fuel, if they are black, then you may have a few problems,, low compression, bad gas, bad valve guides, rings, all of these are what goes wrong in these engines ,and take away alot of power from these engines. That engine should be 80 hp+ easily at 2640 engine rpms,, but, the 460 wont let you dyno the engine at 2640,,, only 1900, or what ever the stock 460 rpms were, the gearing in the pto are different ratios VS the 806, so you may have to tune it at 650 pto rpms rather than 540, its pulling the rpms down too low. Run that compression test, if its under 150, better think about new rings, (if the bores are not worn out) and a valve job. ChadS

Sorry, I made a mistake there,, On the timing, dont set it at 540! Figure out what rpms the pto would be at 2600 engine rpms, Im thinking it may be up around 750 pto rpm,, like i said, the gear ratio is different between the 806 to the 460. Tune it to the higher rpms, if 750 is fast for you, then go to 625-650, that should put a lite load on the engine, and be able to tune it there. Best governor I have found for the IH 6 cyl, is one from the 4 cyl version of the same engine,, that engine is a C-200. Used in the 544-574 Ih tractors. Alot better governor to turn it up to the rpms you need. The combine governor is bout the same as the 460, just turned out farther for the rpms to run in the combine. Chad
