Dead weight pulls?

Are there any dead weight pullers that frequent this site? I'm not familiar with this type of tractor pulling but a friend of mine stumbled across one in western Pa about 2 years ago. I think it was a Memorial day pull. He had brought back some pictures of and explained the rules. Seems each puller has a team, they have 2 minutes to pile dirt up for the tractor to back up ontop of. Then the operator lets out the clutch and gives her he!! He told me one of the winning tractors only pulled the sled 2 inches. Oh and the sled is just slabs of concrete stacked up. The tractors he had pictures of were awesome between the weight arrangements and braces. Certainly different from the tractors I see pulling the transfer sleds. I guess I'm wondering if there are any sites with pictures of this type of pulling and if anyone on this site does go to these pulls

There is a nice deadweight pull in Bakersville OH 2nd weekend in August. Antique pull with transfer sled on Friday night. And tug pull on Saturday and Sunday.

Where are you located? We have several here in west Mi. I like it better than transfer, I have never broke anything on any of my tractors and don't have the problem keeping the front end down as much as I do with the transfer. most of that depends on how high your hitch is and how long the distance is between the sled and the tractor. the part I like is you can keep pulli8ng until you are eliminated and it puts a better show on. the draw back is it does take longer.. Takes a little more skill.

I live in Cecil Co. Md which borders both De and Pa. I think I found a webpage for a pull/show, not real close to me but still worth the trip if I can get away.

Link

I think the pull that my friend went to, they may play a little rougher than what we do. I'll have to see if he has some of the photo's still. If so I'll try to scan 'em and see if I can them on this site. No promises as i'm mostly computer illiterate

I like it better than transfer but it takes a great deal more time.

Seems like it would be harder on the tractors then a transfer sled. Seems like some of those tractors rared up pretty high in my friends pictures. A couple were braced where they had broken the frame sometime in the past. I would like to go see a dead weight pull. It sounds like everybody has a big time>

Danny,

We are going to one near Pittsburgh the first week of August. Below is a link to the show site. They have a King Of The Hill pull on Saturday night. The rumors that I heard were that a JD 720LP won and weighed in at over 30,000 lbs.! It is a must see show. It is about 5-1/2 hours away from us, but I think it is worth the trip.

I don't know all the details for sure, but here's what I do know. KOH is a deadweight pull with virtually no rules. It is a run what you brung bash. I believe that you can use as much weight as you like, but you can't add after the pull starts. It's just stack as much weight on as you can fit and hope that you have enough power to handle it. The John Deere 20 & 30 series 2 cylinders seem to do well in this because of their snails pace creeper first gear.

I have not been to one of these pulls before, but I will not miss Portersville this year! It's a Saturday night pull and I will drive over 5 hours to get there. We will most likely drive home Sunday morning after a brief campout.

720Deere, Your just trying to convert me....featuring John Deere....if I showed up they're liable to have a public hanging. If not I'm certain there would be one when I came home. lol

I'll have to see which direction to go, if I can even go!

Danny,

I can't wait to get up there and see such a pull! I hope you get a chance to go up there. It's a long drive, but if it even comes close to the stories that I've heard about that pull, it's worth the drive.

With all the crazy competitive ignorance going on around here with the transfer sleds, I think we need to start up some old fashioned deadweight pulling. Much more skill involved than the luck required with the transfer sled and track conditions. Max HP won't get you far with deadweight either. You can have a 140 hp Farmall M or Oliver 880 and still get beat by a guy with only 40 or 50 hp and less than $1500 invested in his tractor.

The way you described it to Brad it sounds like the pull my friend attended. I keep thinking the name of the town he was in is Morris, Pa. wonder if its the same bunch that does both pulls???

I'm not sure if a dead weight pull is what we need 'round here or not. It kind of iliminates the lighter classes. Besides we've had enough trouble finding weight for our transfer sleds.

On ATIS we have a little thread on tractor pulling. One fella had written; back in the 60's or so they held dead weight pulls on concrete @ their fair but stopped cause it was to hard on tires....Shoot there are guys still doin' that, non-competitive of course, just so they can wear out their tires!!!
