Well have been strugling getting my 350 powered H to run right. ChadS said to try an older style carb. I went and got a couple older carbs off of W6's. Cleaned up a throttle body, assembled it and put in on the H with the newer style bowl. The H fired up and got it so it runs pretty good. That's all I could do as it was raining (badly needed) and I was out of time. So I get home and am looking at the newer style throttle I just swapped out through the bottom of a tipped up empty Molson Canadian bottle I notice that the throttle shaft that was in it had the slot milled in it. I'm thinking that shaft is out of the older style carbs and that is why no matter where I adjusted the main jet screw or idle mixture screw, it was smoking. Would this older style throttle shaft in the newer style throttle body cause this smoking? I just noticed the different type of shaft when I was cleaning up the two older carbs I just got. Turns out that one of two newer style carbs I got some time ago when I started this rebuild had the wrong throttle shaft in it. I did buy a rebuild kit for the carb but it didn't have the throttle shaft with it. So out of the 4 carbs I got, 3 of the shafts are the older style. I also put new bearings in the governor. They needed replacing once I got it apart. Hard to tell when it's assembled. Gonna have to find a 300-350 manifold somewhere. I bought an aftermarket one but what a POS! Ports where far far from round and the casting looked terrible. Took hours and hours of grinding to clean it up so the ports matched the gasket and get a socket on the bolt heads to tighten it onto the head. Another issue with this POS manifold is that the carb flange is lower or longer than an OEM one. When I bolt up the carb to the manifold, the linkage from the carb to the governor is at an angle. It drops down to the carb about 1/4" over the length of the shaft. Not only does it look terrible but I had to bend the shaft slightly coming up out of the governor so I wouldn't get any binding with the linkage going to the carb. Hopefully I can get the girl on the dyno today and see if the governor works any better. Any thoughts? Cheers! Sid
