ChadS - head gasket

Chad, can I reuse a copper head gasket? I want to pull my head to do some valve work. I have a .040 copper head gasket on it now. If not, what would the thickness of a stock type head gasket be when torqued? I would think that it would be greater than .040.

Yes, you can use them over, as long as you dont over bend it, kink any part of the gasket. I usually clean them up with carb claeaner, wash with soap and water, and set it under a hot lamp till it is dry, and warm to the touch,, it helps reseal and the new gasket sealer really attach to the gasket surface. yes, they are thicker, bout .072 is a stock head gasket compressed thickness for most gaskets on a IH,,,,dunno if that is what you have,,, I use a .060 for the thicker style,, gets expencive for copper sheeting much over that thick.
