The number of hooks at our local club pulls (Eastern Ohio, Wastern PA) is down maybe 50% from years past. Any suggestions how to improve? Is this just a local thing or are others having the same problem?

Here in Tennessee our numbers are down too. We could probably average 100 hooks at each pull through the late 90's into about 2001. Since then it's been a steady decline and we probably average around 60 or so hooks. I guess I'm part of the trend though, I used to make around 35 hooks a year and this year I'll probably hook about 10 times.

I agree that the cost of fuel is keeping us at home more. we are down to maybe a pull a month. having to do more planning than just taking off and going as in past years.

Fuel has affected me going to pulls. I'm having to leave the tractor at home a lot more and driving my car to the far away pulls. The truck gets bad enough milage without the tractor behind it. I take the tractor to local pulls but thats about it.

This topic comes up a lot. Personally, with the high cost of everything, I"d rather pull for a few bucks by place to cover things than a trophy. (insert can of worms here).

Yeah, That $10 is gonna buy a lot! I'd rather have the trophy. I like to have something to show for all my hard work and dedication to antique tractor pulling.

I posted a while back about ours in eastern Va. being down . I think it has to do with the cost of recreation.

I can say for me personally it is definatly a question of fuel cost for both pulling and shows. We used to go to more and tak more but at the price of diesel now we are staying a little closer to home and I am riding my motorcycle more. Rode all night last night and it was only about$12 for fuel and $10 for food. Plus it is just plain HOT to be slinging weights! :)

I really dont let fuel costs bug me when toting the tractor around, I spent some money on restoring it and want to take it around, but my trips are usually fairly local. next year looks even worse from what I hear, diesel is averaging 2.50 here in western pa and gas is 2.35 for mid grade.

the fuel costs aren't stopping me from pulling, heck we drove 5.5 hrs. south just to have fun at a pull. I think the reason for the numbers being down around here is due to multi reasons. Too many classes, starting too early, everyone griping about rules, crappy tracks, cheating sleds, lack of rule enforcement. Need I say more? If they make it enjoyable again, everyone will come back.

Cody, it is easy to drive that far when you are not the one buying the fuel.

Starting too early? How about ending too late?

Too many classes? How many would you have and which ones if you were running a pull? What about the guys with tractors set up for the classes you would exclude? Where are they supposed to pull?

People that gripe about the rules need to join the club they pull with and then actually go to the meetings where the rules are made, and see about changing what they do not like. Griping just causes bad feelings and nothing to show for it. Also makes one into a chronic complainer that no one wants at their pull.

Cheating sleds? I heard that at Tunica last year the sled driver was supposed to be riding the brakes on people he did not like,(read, not pulling a Green tractor) but no one ever proved anything to me. Though there was that one guy on that Super M that looked like he was going to go out the back door with the sled until his drawbar broke right after he had pulled through the last really big hole. I looked at that bar and there was really no good reason for it break, but it did. Sounded like thunder too! Where do you think the sleds are cheating and by what means?

Lack or rule enforcement? How about people getting upset when the rules are enforced and then they do not come back. I saw that happen at Hillside in KY last year, but I also saw the rules totally ignored at Eagleville TN last year as well and that made others leave, so go figure.

As for enjoyable, I already enjoy it, except for the occasional chronic complainer who makes it a bad scene for all involved.
