Good or Bad Idea

After attending many, many tractor pulls I have come to the conclusion that almost anything can be pulled and the crowd will be there. Most of the pulls that have the poorest attendance is the garden tractor pulls. Then it is probably the antiques. It seems with garden tractors and antiques that crowd only consists of the pullers family and friends. The newer tractor and blower tractors start to draw a bigger crowd and the pickups(whether it is stock or not) and the super stock and pro stock tractors and semis bring the biggest crowd.
I was thinking that to bring in more people and participants compact tractors should start pulling. Almost everyone has some kind of compact the question would be whether or not they would be willing to hook it up. Have you ever saw a compact pull? What were the classes? Was there much participation?
A couple years ago I was at a pull and they were pulling garden tractors and modifieds and there was a homemade tractor there that had a 4 cylinder volkswagen diesel with a turbo on that was one of the neatest things I have ever saw and I cannot for the life of me remember what class the thing was pulling in. But it sure was something to see.

You have to have some variety. ANY sort of pulling gets boring after you see 50 hooks of the same thing. I recently attended my first garden-tractor pull, and found it pretty boring, even though several friends of mine had their kids pulling. It was just the same 20 or 30 tractors pulling time after time. It helps if the people are interested in whatever's going on for one reason or another. Be it because they know the pullers or whatever. Our local farm pull down home used to be huge - mini-rods, modified pickups, stock pickups, modified tractors, farm tractors, etc. Then it tapered off big-time to just farm tractors. When they started having pickups again, it picked back up, and then they added semi tractors, which are a big draw. This year they're having 3 nights of pulling - garden and pedal tractors one night, mini-rods and modified tractors another night, and the farm tractors and pickups on yet another night. The pickups are always a big draw, because everybody has been around a pickup, even though they may not know beans about a farm tractor.

A lot of this depends on the announcer. If you have a good one that can keep the crowd into the pull it will solve a great deal of the problem. Keep the action moving all the time. This past weekend I was in Brenham, Texas. The stands there stayed full from 11 AM to about 7-8 PM. It was hot, I am talking about steamy humid sweat runs off of you hot. But the crowd stayed. The announcer kept things going.

It is hard to draw in spectators sometimes to the slower old machines. I used to pull during a weeknight at the Ionia Free Fair and there was a a bunch in the stands, but it was free. The crowd has a blast. Now I believe they opted to do a high dollar per seat stand packer concert, derby, or NTPA performance every night leading the antiques away from the cool night at the grandstands and to a weekend morning. It is true the NTPA big fellas draw the crowd and earn the cash. I was pleased to see a large crowd in the last few years at the Dekalb Super Pull. There were many people there to see antiques. I drove down from Michigan and stayed there just to watch. I guess the variety and numbers of tractors you bring in to an antique pull is reflected in the crowd. Draw in big numbers of pullers, the word spreads, and the crowd follows. With lights, noise, and speed, people come no matter what.

I thnk AC has it correct... People (including my wife) get excited with speed, noise, smoke and flashing lights. I don"t know how to get this in the antiques, and it gets expensive real quick... ...

Personally, I think that anything creeping down the track at an earth shattering 3.5 mph, is a bit boring, and may lead to the "watching paint dry" attitude. I myself pull 3.5, so I am not knocking it, but I enjoy it, and still think it kinda sucks. Is it possible that others, who have no mechanical or pulling related knowledge could feel the same? It's a tough question, about what will bring crowds in...Andrew

Man that was uncalled for. I am in a 4 mph class, but I love pullin' so much one time my brother and I went to a pull and pulled the same tractor in 12 different classes because we love it. I like all pulls lawn mowers, full grown tractors and 4X4's. I can watch a 100 hook pull with the same 25 tractors and never get bored watchin' the old iron get their gots pulled out. I guess it's just what you love. And there is no room for name claaing.
