Building a Super H

Does anyone know how to make some horse power out of these things. My brother has a super M and everyone has tricks to 4 or 5 hp more. Just looking for a little help up here in brush puller country.

SH's can be fun to pull with. Hop em up just a bit, and go have some fun. First, run a compression check, see if all the cyl presures are with in 5-10 psi,, if not, better think about why they are not the same,, could be valves, or rings, but that is pretty important to keep the engine running consistantly. You mite be able to get the uneven compression back up to par, by a valve lash adjustment on the low cyls, adjust, then check the compression. On these, I usually find some compression by loosening up the intake lash just a tad, maybe .005 to .010 more open. If the compression jumps up, thats a HP or two that you are getting back. That can also indicate a worn cam lobe too. So it can be a possible of a simple fix, or a major project. If the compression is over 150, you have a good staring point to start building, if its less than 150, then you should look into a rebuild of whatever is keeping the compression low. Lets say it is 150, maybe a little more,,, cyl pressures are within 5 of each other,, First, start with the ignition, tear the distributor apart, under the points plate, there is a mechanical advance, usualy these are broke, or stuck, or sloppy, you can tell by snapping the rotor, and see if it moves all the way advance, then snaps back all the way,, if not, you need to clean up the area, and put in a new set of advance springs, A set from a chevy HEI recurve kit, the second set of springs in the kit, will loosen up the advance a little, and work a bit faster, when this happens, it gives a bit of throttle responce, it will rev up quicker upon acceleration. Id think about an electronic points conversion kit,, it will give you better starting, and helps keep the timing a bit more precice, and more spark at the plugs. Next is the governor, the stock ol spring is too weak to give a precice governor control. That stock spring can actually hurt you in pulling, as the engine rpms drop, the weights in the governor, overpowers the sping tension, and will shut down the carb, thus making the engine die off faster than it should. The spring wll compliment the ign advance springs,, it will make the governor operate the carb quicker, and give you more throttle responce even more, Usually, after all this is done, the carb has to be rejetted, cause the stock jetting cannot keep up with the upgraded performance you have gained, simply, remove the carb bowl, remove the metering stem, and drill out the main jet 2-4 sizes larger, I dont think you woul have to do anything to the metering stem holes in this case,, it will need just a bit more fuel for acceleration, cause usually it will hesitate after the governor, and ign changes, upon revving it up. The rejet will cure this,,, Now, after all that has been done, you will have about 3-7 more HP at 540, a bit more power and torque for pulling thru the tough spots on the track. Engine controls are the key to hopping these old tractors, they are very slow from the factory, not much good for much, otherthan farm work,,, speed things up a bit, and it can make a different tractor out of it on the track. Hope this helps,, Been pulling H, and Super H farmalls for over 15 years now, and tune em up all the time. ChadS
