my buddy has a 88 oliver. I have an A JD. when we restore them we are going to hook them. who will pull who? I know he has more ponys but i think i have a larger flywheel and bigger pistons and a longer powerstroke but who will win? We are both freshmen at achool and plan to pull together alot so this is purely for fun. thanks for replying . Shohn Rushville, IN

Pull dog thease guys have the right idea, (the track), as you won't prove anything the other way, I have a huge 6' choker cable, we hooked my JD R and my buddies JD 830 and after the smoke clear all we had was 4 holes and the loss of a lot or rubber. Proved nothing else.

When I was a kid my Dad and I hooked our IH H with a loader (& super H rebuild kit) to our as far as I know unrestored unstyled JD A with a very heavy duty chain and set out to see what would happen. Neither one of us could budge the other, until I let the A pull down and eventually killed the engine. Dad started moving me backwards so I hit the brakes and stopped him dead. Might not have been the smartest thing to do but there was never any hint of "raring up". Oh yeah I was probably about 14 then. Sure wish I had one of those tractors now!

I don't recommend hooking the two tractors together, I know because I have done this and it gets really out of control. My friend and I did this with our pulling tractors(which are farm stock class) just for a picture, like the picture named "The Rematch" of an 4020 and a 856. Except I had a JD 4000 and he had a IH 856. It made a nice picture but it is difficult to find a chain to hold to tractors together and the front ends get really light. So in my opinion, take on to the track to see what will happen, it is much safer and better.

pull dog,
unless you weight the front of the tractors down to where they won't fly in the air when trying to pull an unmovable object, I wouldn't try that. What will more than likely happen is when the chain is tight one of you boys are gonna rare up in the air, and that will only be made worse by the other person pulling on your backside, unless you get it clutched soon enough. Do like some of the other boys are suggesting, and take it to the track. At lest then if you loose you can use the excuse of spinning out in someone elses spin holes, or you would have beaten him. Greg H. PS. you asked how it would turn out, and this is just my oppinion so here's what I think could happen if you were determined to try. If you would get on the clutch ahead of the oliver and get some momentum forward your torque might keep you going for the win. Otherwise if that oliver gets heading in a forward direction, and gets some RPMs up, and spinning more quickly than you, you'd have an awful hard time recovering, and would probobly get dragged backwards spinning. But I would not do it if I were you. you know all your other friends would be there and if something went wrong It might make for embarrassing photography.

Hooking tractors drawbar to drawbar is never a very good idea. You would be taking a chance of hurting yourselves and tearing up your tractors.
The better idea would be to go to a tractor pull
and weight up for the same class or two and see
who wins.

If you are hooking them together with a chain, I would suggest something else. As far as who has an advantage over who, probably you will find that you will win some of the time and he will win some of the time. There are just to many variables to consider to be able to make a prediction. In my opinion, the Deere will lug better than the Oliver in the heavier classes. The 88's in our area are either stock or Gingerich built. The hot ones are just that....HOT. The fairly stock tractors pull well but fall short in the lugging department. You should realize that is only my experience and I am sure there are others that would say different. Because of these differences, you will be the only one that make an evaluation on your tractor and your buddies.

Good Luck and be safe.
