AC is right, junk the 8060 head and get the head, that matches the cam. The old 8060 will not help,,, it is restricted, pullers like the 8060 with big strokers,, over 7inches, cause the head is so big, and they dont want to over do it on the compression. they port em, polish em, etc etc and spend alot of $$ on it, when the SM-450 heads are already done that way! A 281 can make some good power,, your looking for torque in the lower rpms, compression is the cheapest way to go to get you there, yeah, custom cams and other parts can help torque too, but not like compression would. That picture was of a 5-3/4 stroker with a 4-1/8th bore, used a 450 head on it, we kept the original stepped head design, and just made em taller. It comes downto what type of pulling you do, and how much you want to spend, percentage pulling, is not much of a HP sport, its a weight game, if you have a M that is mid way inthe class in weight, and cannot make the lowest weight inthe weight class, you may not beat the lightest tractor in the class that can make a good pull with a heavier one. Focus on lightening up the frame to make the lowest weight in the class you pull in, les say you pull 5500-6000 class for an example, if your at 5750, and everyone else is at 5500, the 5500 lb tractors may be beating yu by a few percent, or 15,,, you have to be right with them in the weight, so if your midway in the class,, get lighter, or jump up to the next heavier class and be at the bottom of the class, like 6010,,,, and your percent can be a little more consistant with the winners, if the tratcor can make a good pass and get a decent distance. How do you measure the distance you pull? inches of travel the box moves up the rails,, or ground distance? Id just rebuilt your short block to the 281,,, get ahold of me, and I can help you with pistons. Chad
