24 tires no good for pulling?

I've been pulling an Allis CA at 3000lbs and I'm having a tough time running with a Cockshutt 20, Massey 22, and Ferguson TO-20. I've got a great hitch and lots of weight adjustment, but I haven't found the right recipe quite yet. My tires are old, hard 12.4-24's that are 45 degree, but they don't hook up well. I had a guy tell me at the last tractor pull that my tractor has a disadvantage because it has 24" tires and they are no good for pulling. Is this true? He says you need at least a 28" tire to be competitive. I'm no stranger to pulling but I've only pulled bigger tractors on 38's. Any other ideas on how to make a Allis CA win? Thanks.

i've experiencer with hard tracks and very loose tracks, i run a WD that weighs 3600 empty with low gas or no battery. i am running 13.6x28's and i took the tire gauge from my fourwheeler and put 4 3/4lbs in my tires, people say it lowers the hitch height....and its going to ruin my tires, but say that to my trophy shelf. but i need 14.9's to kick everybody's butt.

I am playing with a B in Div I. and II, 2500, 3000 and 3500. Every track is different, and the same track is different as the day goes on. Last year, at one pull, the track went from massive yuch!!, to very good, as the day progressed. On a really HARD track I think that the smaller tires are an advantage, but a liability on a loose track.

It could be your tires. On some tracks the old 45s seem to be better and on others the 23 and 30s seem to have an edge. My tires just happen to be the Armstrong / Titan style. I run my tires, and always have, harder than most guys. As any tires sags or flexes the drawbar lowers and your weight transfer diminishes. The true size of any tire is reflected in the volume of CaCl solution it holds. Certainly, other folks will have different thoughts, and let me pre-empt their comments by saying that, after four decades of pulling I do not know it all. Any one who says that they do is only showing their ignorance. I have had gobs of fun and gathered a bunch of wood to show for it. The fellowship, food and fun are the important parts. Hook and run!!, Best, Phil

I started pulling on a John Deere H. I always had much more grip than any of the Allis machines in 2500# class. Unfortunately, they had more power. The H tires are narrow 9x 28" or 30" if I remember right (with low pressure). Maybe they would get you just enough to scoot you to a win. I'll look tonight and see what they are. Of course Oliver 60 and 66 seem to dominate that class in our club.

An infinitely large tire would behave about like tracks with regards to tire connecting to the surface. The reason they don't allow tracks in tractor pulls is they tear up the course and they have an unfair advantage against tractors with tires.

Your tractor will have better grip with larger tires. However, you'll have to run in a lower gear or less rpm to get the same ground speed. Do you run in a speed limited pull?

Less rpm = less power (reasonably), so you don't want that. That means run in a lower gear. Choose the largest tire that you can that will allow you to run at the maximum rpm and not exceed your speed limit.

my opinion

I agree that bigger tires might have an advantage but this is in a stock class. I think the tractor would look pretty funny (and obvious) with bigger rubber on the rear. We have a 5 mph rule, but I pull the tractor in 1st gear anyway, going about 2.1 mph.

With the same contact area on the track. A tall narrow tire beats the short and wide tire almost every time. Particularly on loose tracks.

we also pull a CA in 3500-4500 classes. for farm stock classes you have to run the stock sizes, we do. IF you rules allow larger tires, try them. try more weight on rear, as ours pulls well on the wheelie bars with front in air. If it gets traction it dont' matter what size tire the other guys have.

Do you pick up the front tires before you spin out? I had to get my 12.4 - 24"s down to 8 pounds tire pressure to get them to hold. That is with a Allis Chalmers C for the 3000" class.

Try a set of 13.6 X 38. You'll be happy.

Changing from 24" rubber to 38" will change your gearing ALOT... just guessing, you will need twice the HP to handle the taller rubber

Maybe back off to a 11.2 X 38. Shouldn't be too much for CA Allis in low gear. I'm not an AC man, but it always seemed to me that the Allis had way more power than tire when they came from the factory.
